    Defender td5 Black smoke

Hi guys My td5 defender is having issues, i reciently had the turbo hoses replaced with the silicon type after it started blowing lots of black smoke and not getting anywhere in a hurry.
I have done about 600km's since and all was great until this morning - black smoke & no power again, the air flow meter was checked last week when the mechanics did the hoses and that tested ok, the air filters are almost new, i am at a loss, the guys who do the work on my car are sugesting it could be the ECU is this likley?

i can't really afford to be replacing things like this at this stage.

any help advice would be great here I am at a loss

    black smoke

My 130 has a hose that connects between the intake on the R/H guard and the air filter housing. Don't know if your Fender is configured the same, if so somewhere to look

I have checked all the hoses all seem to be intact and look ok, all hose clamps are reasonably new, not really sure how else to check.

This probably sounds silly, but silicone hoses, when first put on, sometimes, if not properly secured, can slip off the turbo outlet, producing the symptoms you describe.Possibly, the hose is not fully off, and not obvious. Umm--- your mechanic sounds suss, Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

    Thanks Bob,

I have had a visual look but can't really notice anything that looks like it could be loose.

Highly unlikely it has anything to do with ECU. The plugs can become oily sometimes but the symptoms are different ,but worth checking these anyhow.

Sice the replacement hoses had everything fine for a while, it is most likely associated with this.
A restriction in the induction side is often the cause of the symptoms you describe.

Thanks Strangy, I had the injector harness replace 3 months ago, and have cleaned out the wiring loom, there is no oil in the harness at the moment.
I agree with the hose issue still, I think i may be getting a little conned here

firstly i am no expert, but i had similar symptoms (black smoke, no power) a few months ago and it turned out to be the egr thingo getting stuck open ... or closed... mechanic cleaned it up and all good... you may not even have your egr, but thought i'd throw it in there anyway...
