Paint matching from code (Autobarn etc)

Has anybody got any feedback either good or otherwise on getting paint matched from the original code by places like Autobarn etc?

I have to do some touch ups on my Camino gold SIII. They can match and put in a spray pack for $30 a can and they go by the original paint code recipe on their computers. But obviously I don't want to end up with a colour that is way off. Are there any better places to go in Brisbane (northside preferably)? And how do you account for the 30+ years of exposure - new paint next to old won't look that great. Any tips?

Also the paint they do is acrylic, not sure but would the original paint have been some sort of enamel?

I have tried there product for Avalon Blue on a disco to touch up some areas on a faded roof, It was a good match.
You can also take a sample / panel to a professional Auto paint store and they can macth pretty close to the balenance of teh pait on the car allowing for age and fade if its just a touch up

I really need a spray pack because it is for new door tops. I can then use that for touch ups by spraying a little into the lid and using with a small brush or cotton bud works well. So I want a pretty good match. I've had some bad matches using the pre packaged stuff that supercheap etc sells, even when you match to the exact paint code for something simple like a white or a red, it has been way off and a totally different level of gloss.

Not sure about Brisbane but Crash Supplies in Adelaide can do spray cans with 1K or 2K paint in them.

Excellent match. I've used both paint codes and sample panels and they have been great. Much better than the old Holt's pre-package stuff.

We use "The Paint Place" in Beenleigh, they have the formula on computer for 'Comino gold" at our request and several other Land Rover colours we use

Suggest you try a local Paint Place to you for similar requests, can send the formula if required

Hi-Chem Motor Spray has the formula, through it was originally Dulux

    And yes Acrylic lacquer..

For abourt $35 you can get a refillable rechargeable spray container (ECO-CAN) that you pressurise with compressed air through a schrader valve. (Seen on catalog for Products That Work)

There are also PREVAL sprayers which use disposable cannesters to provide the power (compressed aerosol) Preval | Affordable & Portable Aerosol Spray System. You get a can that you put your paint mix into and plug the aerosol cannester onto of the paint container.

As far as matching colours from the code, I tried this about 6 months ago and the colour was way out. In my case it was a relative new vehicle and the colour Stornoway Grey.

If the vehicle is a bit older, the paint fades and matching from the tag ID can be worse. Depends on how fussy you are, but IMHO it is preferable to have the paint matched from a small sample - on a Disco the fuel filler cover works, on some Defenders, Series, ... (non County), the front vents come off pretty easily to get the paint matched.

    Mrs HH,

Does paint place do custom mixed into aerosols?

I was trying to get some olive drab mixed a few years back to paint some M26 grenades I was restoring (deactivated of course) and had no end of trouble finding a paint shop that could mix the right colour, I ended up using a tamiya spraypack for painting model kits, but sadly the cans are very small and the colour isn't available (camino gold).

Ideally it needs a colour matched so it fits with the aged look of the paint, so it doesn't stand out too much when used as a touch up.

I do have a spray gun of sorts - it is a cigweld blower type, I've used it to paint fences and outdoor furniture etc, not sure how well it would work on a car though. I do need to redo the rear floor area after the lpg goes in next week, it is a bit scratched as you'd expect. Might be good enough to do it with a fine roller? Otherwise I'll put marine carpet in it.

    Yes

Take a panel that has not seen any damage, polish it first, down to eye match it then adjust the formula to suit, and ask them to print out the formula for future reference

Marine carpet works well in the back of my 'zara' and deadens the noise

Did you direct stick it down or lay it with retaining strips to hold it there? Our supplier of carpet for work is going to give me 3 or 4 metres off the roll of some new high quality marine carpet for it (someone ordered it and paid for it but the job didn't go through) which should be sufficient as it's a 2m wide roll. Just have to decide whether to go brown to match the front seats or black/charcoal which would be more traditional.
