OK this is a pinto OK

so firstly it will have flat top pistons with Valve recess cut into them. deeping the recesses for a higher lift cam is a wast of time not only is hard on the pistons but there is little flow benefit. the Jap rods are used because they doint stretch as much and that's about all. they are longer but the pistons have the gudgeon higher or closer to the crown. this set up cuts down on wall friction thus gives you more GO for the same oomph.

because of the valve to crown relationship, high lift cams are not the go. infact imposable so we can forget about that. longer duration and longer over lap is whats done. but since there is no extra lift we can assume that springs would not be an issue, if a spring is broken then its broken, doint blame the cam.

since we doint know if its a dropped or burnt valve, well we can assume that its a burnt valve because if it was dropped valve you would be complaining about the oil running out though the hole in the sump ( probably)
longer duration needs a richer mix or you burn valves, some times pushing the spark forward and a wider spark curve.

worn cams, common, cam fail was the 1# death of these motors, Mr ford decided on using a silly bit of copper pipe in the head that just was not up to the job, im surprised that any one is still using a pinto much better to grab a sierra.

burnt valve, slow burning fuel on a lower compression with a long duration valve timing, running a bit lean ( IE not running rich) jeppa that will do it

At the block? haha yeah that'd be mad, it's not at the block anymore though, I want to take it for a run out at QR sometime this year if you're keen to come out

how do you know that? the DCOE's will lean out and there idle or low reve richness is more due to a build up of fuel pulsing backwards and forwards in the manifold. hence some times the black puff, but that is not an indication of running rich. but a burnt valve is an indication of running lean

you need to stand behind these things on a rolling road and Cry
