    Shared aerial on CB...

    Hi all,

I'm planning to install a second UHF CB into my 'fender. Do I need a second aerial or can I just use a 'double adaptor' off a single aerial?

    Thanks,

    Nathan

    Hi Nathan,

Simple answer is you need another aerial. Without any fancy devices between the two units you will overload (possibly fry with 5watts of power) the receiver of one unit when you transmit with the other.

A passive impedance matching device (aka "double adaptor") will also give you a 6db loss in your signal strength.

    Cheers

I'm sure you could get a coax switch box, or do you intend to have both units running at the same time.

    Zap!

    Hi Nathon

    Don't, is the quick answer.

Why do you want to use two UHF's CB so close ?

Two similar frequency aerial's can still interact and the radiation pattern will be distorted.

A better way maybe, is to use a UHF CB that has all the controls, including a speaker, on the hand piece then extend the microphone lead .

    Cheers Arthur

I'm guessing here but I'm assuming the OP wants to run like I do.

    1 unit on a group channel(s)
1 unit scanning all but the group channel(s)

This is how myself and several club members operate.

try to get the two aerials as far apart as you can..... every time i want to use my UHF, my scanner goes nuts, and the aerials are ~400mm apart....

That's exactly what I want to do. It sounds like the second aerial will be on the back wheel...

Mine are less than 300mm apart and no 'noticeable' ill effects...
Most members have theirs fitted the same. One is a radio guru and he's not concerned enough to re-jig the set up.
