    Defender gearbox

Yesterday, without warning and with no provocation, I lost reverse and fifth gear on my 1996 Defender.

Probably something simple. No noise. No stiffness in stick.

Stick goes into gear, but no drive.

    Has anyone experienced this before?

    All other gears normal!

Could be embarrasing in the field....

    Regards, Bill

Put simply The layshaft extension has sheared off effectively disconnecting these two gears. You require a rebuilt or new gearbox.
