I hate the crappy indicator stalk mounted horn button. I'm still in the habbit of "beeping" in the centre of the wheel as it's the obvious place to do this. I know series 2s had the horn in the centre and some early series 3s did too, but looking at the layout of the steering wheel and the column being solid, plus the horn switch running the positive part of the circuit (at least that's how it's wired on mine) how is one supposed to run 2 wires to the inside of the steering column shroud? Was there a different setup on vehicles with a centre mounted horn? I'm thinking wires will be snagged and severed easilly, earthing them which is bad. The switch used to be mounted elsewhere but it was also hard to find in a hurry. I can easilly mount it somewhere else but the ideal spot is the steering wheel. My centre cap seems to have clips that might suggest they used the same cap and just fitted the button in if required. Any ideas?
Steering wheel on the late S2a is identical to the S3 wheel. The horn button though operates on the earth return, and is connected via a wiper on a slip ring at the top of the column, probably (I haven't looked at it with this in mind) incompatible with the self cancelling switch on the blinkers. The earth return rather than switching the positive is not a problem, just put in a relay.
Early Series 1 with a centre horn push used a different system, with a wire running the length of a hollow steering column. Bit of a problem to arrange this!
