While I was out today,I drove down a particularly nasty piece of track and just hit the lower rear of the fuel tank on a large rock shelf.Unfortunately, even though the tank and built in protection plate were only pushed up 5mm or so,the tank began to leak, bringing to an end what was looking like a good day out. After getting home and inspecting the tank after draining most of the fuel out of it,I found that the bottom of the fuel tank has actually been rusting away from the outside, between the tank and the protection plate. And the slight bang had been enough to push a piece of sand or grit through a rusty section creating a leak from a hole no more than the size of a head of a pin.Lucky I wasn't further away from home.
What I would like to know is,does anyone know of an aftermarket tank in the same size as the standard.I have no need for a large tank in this vehicle, and a large tank will hang down further and reduce my departure angle. If not, does anyone know any parts places that might stock a standard tank for a 200Tdi 110 Defender?
Last resort will be to try and find a second hand Tdi tank,if anyone knows of one at a reasonable price.

another fix is to sweat some solder onto the porous surface
Pretty common - the gap between the tank and protection plate is just the right size for gravel and mud to lodge, and it wears little pin-holes on the tank.
Had the same problem on friend's 200Tdi Defender, and we got a 2nd hand replacement from TRS (at Lonsdale , SA). No too bad to replace, but a very snug fit between the body rails. Took us 3 or so hours from memory, and that was up on a hoist which made it a bit easier.
My 130 did the same thing.
I found it just before Christmas one year when you couldn't get anything so i dropped the tank on Boxing Day, cleaned it all up and used a two pack epoxy for refrigeration use and it's been fine for the last five-six years.
I was going to braze or solder it and i have all the gear, including nitrogen for purging but got the creeps and used the epoxy instead.

Yes the protection plate is a real pain.I think it might be a problem getting a second hand fuel tank sent. Most companies don't like to transport used fuel vessels. So unless Land Vehicle spares which is not that far from here has what I need,it is a long drive to find one I think.
I will be doing it in my driveway by myself,so I will give myself a full day.

Ok problem solved
Found a new tank in QLD
Apparently made in Canada,at least it isn't made by B**tpart after reading about all the problems they have with their tanks.Ordered from British Offroad on Monday lunchtime, arrived today lunchtime.Great service and a pleasure to deal with.

Yeah, it's a common problem. The original tanks just aren't sealed well enough between the tank and the skin, not for the long term anyway.
I did a repair on mine with POR-15 and treated all surfaces. That was a few years ago with no problems.
As you can see in the before pic, it's a bit of a mess when you pull that outer skin off.
Cheers, Murray

I had that happen to my old Range Rover. I took the tank to a Radiator place they cut the bottom half of the tank off and repalced with 2mm plate.
