    Front Oil Seal 3.5 V8

The front oil seal on my V8 has started to become a bit leaky and I will have to change it before too long. Looks pretty straight forward - remove the crankshaft pully, the mud shield etc and pop out the seal. I suspect there might be a wear groove so might have to put a speedie sleeve on it.

Are there any particular issues I need to be aware of - is the pully likely to be an issue and if it is hard to get off - what is the best approach - puller, tap or prise?

    Thanks

The pulley came off easily on my 3.9 - the hard part is undoing the retaining bolt. I took the sump off and jammed the crankshaft with a block of wood but if that seems too difficult on yours, you might like to try the spanner on the bolt trick, coupled with using the starter motor to slam the spanner against the chassis

You may want to get a speedy sleeve handy as more often than not the seal has worn a groove into the balancer and a new seal wont fix it.

Remove the Radiator, Fan and Shroud to give yourself some room for the Puller (which attaches to the centre of the hub), never prise or tap as you may knock the outer balance ring off the pulley hub, it is mounted on a ring of rubber. When relacing damper/pulley don't flog it on as you will damage thrust bearings on crank, tap it on from the centre hub till you can get the bolt in, then use that to press it all the way on. I use a 3/4" socket and breaker bar and jam it on (or a bit above) the pass. side chassis rail (top), disconnect the coil and give the ign. key a quick twist, just enough to crack the breaker handle against the chassis, the crank bolt should undo, go for a speedi-sleeve, Regards Frank.
