    diff setup how hard?

I am going to have a go at changing my diff pinion and crown wheel in my disco diffs. I had a look at the rave cd and it seems to tell you step by step on how to do it. Im a sparky by trade and im going to get my fitters at work to give me a hand. they haven't done this before but im sure they will be able to help me. Is there any tricks to doing it or if i just follow the rave cd i should be ok? Also do the ashcroft pinion sets have a height stamped on the pinion gear? and if they dont how do you set it up?

It's a pretty straight forward process as you've probably gathered from RAVE. But time consuming and into the frustating if you don't have the right gear.

I didn't think there could be a known pinion height as the best method was to lap the gears and go from there.

Gears are lapped together, so height is gained then, + or - from a given height off bearing centre line, you need a dolly to fit in the carrier bearings, a machined spacer, some feeler gauges and pinion bearing shims, it's the kinda job that's easy once you know how but daunting initially, then you'll need a dial indicator to complete the rest

its the scariest thing to setup the first time you do one...

theres a bit of maths in doing it properly and you need to have the special height block to work out the pinion position and spacers.

follow the rave, have a dummy run assembling it with the old parts (machine the outer cases of the bearing races down 1mm to let them just slop in and fall out) till you feel comfortable with the procedure then go again with the new parts

if you dont have all the gear it can be done with a stock of shims and a tube of bearing blue the old school way but it can take an age to get it right.

I used to have the patience, oddly enough when I was younger. Would sit down for hours and lap and shim away. Now I'll just pay someone.
