Disco II dash lit up like Xmas

Parked and stopped the car, took the keys out and tried to close the door with remote, wouldn't work. I noticed then the dash was lit up like a xmas tree, some lights flashing as well and this continues for as long as I leave it. Restarted the car, seemed to drive alright but then stopping the car, all the dash lights come on and stay on again, alarm can't be set and locks won't work with remote. The locks work with dash button but not otherwise. Tried the spare key and the symptoms are the same.

Is this just the random response of an ECU gone crazy?

I tried disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it a few times - everything on the dash lights up as before, sometimes side indicators blink continuously but now the TD5 refused to start as well, just the starter turning with random dash lights on but no sign of injection.

Any ideas anyone? Aside from ...

    Similar electrix probs

I have a similar problem as Canbloggera -

Driving car when out of the blue, the engine 'stumbled' as if it was fuel starved. Lights on dash all lit up - tacho keeps bouncing up and down and the temp guage went up to maximum.

Pulled over and shut it down. Waited a few minutes and re-started...all good. No lights, temp spot-on & drives OK apart from another engine miss on the way home.

Got home safely and while idling in the driveway did some electrical checks. I turned the headlights on and the engine promptly stopped

As a matter of fact - everything shut down apart from 1 headlight

Switched to parkers only and everything energised as per normal (Could hear fuel pump priming and the normal dashlights lit up prior to starting engine).....hmm - wierd and very strange.

Turned all lights off and re-started engine. Starts completely normal until I try the headlights and again, the engine stops and everything shuts down ....?????

I'm leaning towards a poor earth from the tacho bouncing back and forth and the erratic lights but have checked engine earth, battery, fuses, switches and am stumped.......

Before I book into an auto-electrican - does anyone have an opinion or has had this happen?
It really has me scratching my head as I can't fathom why the engine would shut down when an electrical load is initiated....unless it was a poor or bad earth

Thanks all. It's curious that each time there's a problem it's like the worst of times. An emergency. Neighbour borrows other vehicle just hours earlier, OS visit needs reliable vehicle to see around and got a dinner appointment in 20 minutes so everythings gone haywire. From 2 to 0 transport in no time. That's when aulro works best - exhausted of ideas, but with the message out, I'm free to melt down.

A bit of patience helped. Left the battery disconnected for a few hours, reconnected it and everything was back to normal except for the doors that still wouldn't lock via the remote.

A few more hours of doing nothing and everythings OK. What was that all about???

Thank goodness for prevailing ... for now ...

Mine did the same, I found that the fusebox under the steering wheel was corroded. Got wet after some heavy rain after fitted a new windscreen. Cleaned it up and all was fine.

Just an update 'cos I kinda muscled into this thread (Sorry Canblogerra)

I've double checked all earth points, removed them and cleaned up any dirt/corrosion and re-fitted. For no reason at all I made up another earth strap and have fitted it from a bolt on the T-case and run it to the chassis near the cross member and.................

    It seems to have worked!!

Idles fine now with lights on and off. Drives OK with all elecs running including charging camping lights etc off the aux battery.

Looks like rain this evening so another trip tomorrow with lights and wipers on will be the final test before I can be assured that it is fixed.

This has to be one of the weirdest ones I come across in years and wasted a free Sunday

Looks like the green steam has been contained garrycol Haven't heard that expression since my RAN days thanks for an old memory -
