    help from Mt Isa

    Gday guys,

We got into Mt Isa today on our way up north, and we are now in need of a mechanic for the disco. I am leaking some serious oil from my rear diff. It seems the 3rd member gasket has finally gone.

Does anyone know of any good mechanics in Mt Isa? or anyone who has a workshop which I can try and fix it myself?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    cheers

    Darren

yeah I have tools with me, and can do it for worst case scenario. But I guess my biggest problem is where to drop the oil and dispose of it, and also what liquid sealant to use?

Any one have any suggestions for sealant?

    cheers

Have been in a similar situation myself looking for somewhere to drop diff oil. I've known of people dig a hole and park the diff over it, not something I would advocate unless desperate. If you get a couple of 3Litre milk cartons (2 litres might even be big enough, can't recall whether diff oil qty is slightly more or slightly less than 2L), cut the side out of one of them to use as a drain pan, then decant the oil into the intact one for disposal. If you find a quiet spot off the side of the road and form a couple of mounds to park the wheels on, you'll have room to work under the vehicle, with a cheap polytarp to lie on.
It's not a difficult job to remove and refit a diff. BUT it's unusual for the gasket to leak, and I wonder if perhaps your housing is cracked. Mine was. I suggest a thorough clean so that you can see exactly where the oil is escaping after a short drive.
