could the rear axel housing be bent only needs to be out .5 of a mil![]()
On my series 3 109 I have noticed that one tyre is wearing faster than the rest. and no, surprisingly it is not a front tyre so I can rule out wheel alignment on the front. It is the drivers side rear tyre. All 4 tyres are the same from the same batch, 3 have lots of meat left on them but the one looks like it is now due for replacement (try replacing one tyre to match the other 3 when they are an obscure foreign brand of light truck tyre - Otani). It was lower than the rest when I got the car but still legal, now it has gone down to the TWI level. It seems to be worn evenly, not just inside/outside which could suggest alignment. The only spares I have are a retread which I wouldn't trust and a couple of the original tyres from when the car was new, neither of which is ideal as a permanent replacement, but first I need to find a reason why one would wear so I can stop it happening. Any ideas?

Previous owner repaired collapsed swivel bearing or similar and then rotated worn tyre to the back?
Thinking outside the box here. If we can exclude the axle being out of true and also eliminate it being a faulty tyre then could it be load related as in one side of the axle has different springs/ spring rates to the other.
Probably just a rubbish tyre, not the first time a cheapie fails prematurely. The best way is to fit 2 new tyres to this axle and monitor the replacements. Tyre rotation would have highlighted axle problems.
Has balance of tyre been checked Or even worn out shocker ???
Check the wheel bearings are adjusted correctly, a wobbly hub is not good for tyre wear, Regards Frank.
Do you have current wheel alignment figures ? Even if the rear end is technically non adjustable, it is still read when a wheel alignment is completed. If the rear axle is offset to the extent it is wearing one tyre, it should show on the wheel alignment data.

hi
if the tyre is evenly worn across the whole tread it is unlikely that there is a fault with the suspension tracking or axle as this would all show up as uneven wear. i can only suggest that something was changed before you purchased the vehicle. i agree that all you can really do is replace both rear tyres and monitor the wear.
good luck and keep us informed.

I'm inclined to think either a faulty tyre, previous rapid wear due to an alignment problem or similar, since fixed (not necessarily in that position), but the other possibility is that there is a dragging brake or wheel bearing. If on the back you would not notice it pulling, but should note the hub getting hot after a run.
