    97 300tdi defender - charging issues

Okay, after travelling 2000ks last week on holidays we get home and one of my batteries is dead... (failing under load) no big issue, shop around and get a new one. Car starts fine, next morning that battery is flat too.
Also, I am not getting the Battery/charge light illuminating on start up (globe is fine), and I can't get more than 12.9v across the terminals when car is running.
I've gone over the electrics and it looks like all my earth points are okay, and I'm guessing its the generator that has died BUT there is just something about that charge light not working either that has me thinking there may be another issue here.

Anyone had this problem before? Or should I give up and enjoy the rest of my weekend and book it in with someone tomorrow (any suggestions for the Adelaide area)?

    Cheers

sounds like the alternator brushes have lifted.

the warning light mainly lets you know if youve lost the excitation field.

does the voltage vary at all with load and engine revs?

get the voltages under the following conditions

No Load (all accessories off) Engine Stopped (ignition on)
Full Load (all accessories (high beam lights, aircon on full fan speed) on) Engine Stopped (ignition on)
Full Load (all accessories off) Engine Running
Full Load (all accessories (high beam lights, aircon on full fan speed) on) High Idle (1500rpm)

    you should see about

    NLES 12.5v
FLES 11.5-12.5v (if its lower than 12v your battery isnt fully charged or is dying)
FLER 12.5-13v (up to 13.8 is ok)
FLHI 13-14.8V (over 14.8v is excessive)

Like Dave says Exciter circuit isn't operational, either through a brush circuit or an exciter diode in the rectifier dead. My advice is get the alt bench tested and if the rectifier IS dead, the best answer is take this opportunity to fit a 100A Disco 300 Tdi one, a direct fit and way more durable and rebuildable.

while you're at it dont forget to change the belt, idler and tensioner.

If memory serves theres a difference in the pully size that means your existing belt wont fit.

ONLY if you get an alternator from a early or later Disco. The same model years in Def and Disco ran the same length belt/ pulley diameter.
