i agree mine is the same, before anyone says why listen to am.AM has more range out here and AM stations are the only stations we can get.perhaps we are spoilt by the clarity of the FM band
My LR original head unit (D2a) seems to get a lot of 'noise' when on the AM band. Strange thing is it doesn't seem to be related to engine speed, in fact I can hear it when the engine is off. Somedays it's worse than others.
Is it possible that it's an aerial problem?
I'm stumped.

My fridge causes static because the stupid aerial is stuck in the back window.
One of the first mods (7 years ago) was to put a long range stick up front, but never got around to it.Fit a after market unit instead that plays disks, mem sticks and bt to phone and ipod.
It may well be an aerial problem, but also you may be spoilt by the lack of noise on FM. And it does not help that many car radios do not have very good Am receivers.
A further possible problem is that there is a lot of electrical noise in your environment - for example, you can get a lot of interference from leakage over power line insulators after a period of prolonged dry, especially during the first light rain.

Get an external antenna, the tinted windows block the in-glass antenna.
