I'm not the expert that Tombie is, but I would have thought that what you have said there is precisely the reason it probably isn't oil actually in the ECU. My guess would be that if the ECU is damaged, it either will just not work, or would be consistent in its fault.

there's oil on one of the bolt threads and given that the bolts are completely contained within the ECU, then that would tend to suggest that there is oil in the ECU. Also, oil and grime contamination can result in intermittent rough running - I've certainly experienced much smoother running on occasion when I've cleaned sensors and run meths through the loom...

I have had several apart and unless yours is different to mine, you will find that is is not really sealed. From the outside it looks all sealed and water tight, but from the inside you can see some breather holes which go straight out to the rest of the world, just ready for water to get in if you go a little too deep for a little too long:(
I had oil in one of mine which I just cleaned out with some contact cleaner

Have you sealed the harness itself?
I cleaned my old one and used Loctite RTV Blue Max for the interim to get me through. New harness has arrived and waiting for three bond 1207B to arrive to seal up wires and plug area.
There are lots of post on oil in ecu, you should have done a search first.

finally got around to opening the ECU up. Actually wasn't that difficult with some patience and gradual prising open with a screwdriver. And yes, there was oil inside it at the red plug. Sprayed with fast-drying electrical cleaner, resealed with sensor-safe gasket sealant and all good.

So...if you've had a lot of oil at the red plug, and if one or more of your ECU bolt holes has oil in it, this is worth checking...
