    UFIXIT Windsceen Repair - FAIL

There was a recent thread on windscreen repairs but typing "windscreen repair" into the search function does not show it up.

A friends car needs to go in for a roadworthy and it has a small impact and two one inch cracks just to the left in the drivers field of vision.

We bought a UFIXIT windcreen repair kit - what a waste of $25.

It filled the area around the impact but would not fill the cracks - following the instructions to push a little on the windscreen from the inside and providing a little heat did not help at all - fact the opposite as nit made the crack a little longer. Later with the pressure of the suction caps and forcing the resin in, we noticed another 1" crack had appeared so we have ended up with a windscreen that is in far worse condition than we started.

Now we only gave this a go just in case it would work and had already vectored in the price of a new windscreen but I am very disappointed with this product. Probably OK for concentric type impacts but not if cracks are involved.

another advantage for subscribers is they can use boolean logic in searches eg "windscreen AND repair"

The Ufixit product is excellent, you are simply asking it to do more than it was designed to do!
If you have 1" long cracks you need a new windscreen, simple as that. The Ufixit is aimed at "bullet hole" type repairs and having repaired several, it does this extraordinarily well... at least as good as O'briens or the like (albeit it, with some practice) and the total cost per repair is less than $5.00.
By the way, I have no financial or other interest in the product... just a happy user.

Unfortunately the advertising blurb and the instructions make it clear that it is supposedly suitable for cracks up to 100mm long and has a section covering bullseyes etc using the suction cap thingie and seems ok but the second section talks about cracks which just did not work.

I appreciate a trained operator could do it better but at the prices O'Briens charge for these repairs you are not much more out of pocket getting a new screen from an independent.

Ok, I stand corrected.... they really need to change what they say in their info then. I can't see any way of getting the resin to flow along a crack that long and yes, if you put pressure on from the inside, the cracks will extend.

I saw a demonstration at the last 4wd show, the guy put a bulls eye in a windscreen ,and then repaired it.Then he put a crack at least 25mm long in a screen and repaired it,while I was watching.I was that impressed, that I bought it on the spot for an emergency. So I know it can be done, just needs some practice.

I tried using it on a bulls eye and it sort of worked. Filled about half the defect but I could not get it to completely fill it even using heat at the back as per instructions. The little applicator/injector thinggy was pretty flimsy so it would probably work with a better design (or maybe a better operator!)

In attempting to fix a bullseye, I got it to work on both the bullseye, as well as the two 4 inch cracks I created by "pushing" on the back of the windscreen to let the glue flow in.

Trick no 1 was patience, 2. make sure you're out of the sun (even reflected sun if you can) 3. leaving 2-3 mm gaps (every 2 cm say) in the glue you lay down helps the air trapped in the crack to escape.

Although the instructions were open to interpretation (i.e. what is "gentle pressure" from inside the vehicle?). The end result was good enough to pass "the pits" on a sunny afternoon.

I did the same thing - the the key with cracks is to let gravity do the work - it took 15 to 20 minutes to fill fully.

    Cheers
