Disco 1 horn not working and SRS warning light constantly on!!

Hi guys,I have been searching threads and have not found much relating to my problem (apologies if I have missed something obvious!!)...

I have a 98 s1 disco and The SRS light stays on,this has been happening for a couple of months and now the horn has stopped working,it was working intermittently in certain positions as the steering wheel was turning but now it seems not at all.....just wondering if the problems are related because on some other euro cars it seems that they are..... I have removed the steering wheel and nothing looks out of the ordinary... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! thanks alot. R.

Going out on a limb here Do you have airbags, cruise control et. Perhaps you have somehow broken the (dont know the correct name) but they call it the clock spring its under the steering wheel . if its been broken then it could cause these problems.

Dead on target - the rotary coupling ( Snail coupling) carries all the stuff on the steering wheel. So if the horn is playing up so is the airbag. Which is why the fault light comes on. If you haven't got one already, buy a workshop manual on CD ( from 'Shop', top function bar) and then find yourself a working 2nd hand device. The new ones can be a little pricey. Unfortunately it needs a dealer device to reset the SRS .

    Hi, guys

My first post and I have tried to reply to a thread as I have a similar/same question so I am crossing my fingers that it slots in nicely.

First of all this is a great forum and I have been reading "from afar" for some time doing my home work and taking notes. I have longed for one of these for over ten years and have been saving my pennies.

SO.. I have purchased my first 2001 Series 2 It is dark green with an amazing deep reflective lustre. 5 Seater Beige cloth trim. ARB front bar. r/racks. It has 2002 headlight upgrade. And Pirelli Scorpions ATS.

First Owner was a Doctor so City KMS only. Second owner bought at 50k and sold it to me at 177k. Two trips to QLD from Tas with some off-roading here on the apple isle.

Second owner was a boat mechanic and was extremly fastidious. He has tackled the big things. Head Replaced, Plastic guides to metal ones,Rear Air Shocks, Genuine Landy suspension on all fours,Silicone hoses, and used fully synthetic lubricants and just by looking at the unit he has looked after the car amazingly well but has still used it as a daily drive. The truck has never been to a smash repair.

The vechile has ABS and Hill descent but no ACE or CDL that I can tell

Some things that have not been repaired are Left hand Horn Button, SRS Light ON. and water marks on the cloth in the back.

    So my questions for you:

1: To fix the horn can I just pull on the centre of the steering wheel to remove the center rubber piece to get access to the buttons or will I have an airbag in my face?

Then I assume I will be looking to re-glue one or more legs onto the button.

2: The SRS light. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting wire under driver seat as suggested in another thread that has not worked. The previous owner went to dealer who reset light but a few weeks later it came back on and he has left it since then.

I have also read about the need to check the state of the loom that is inside the steering wheel, rotary coupling as LANGY has suggested on the 22nd of August 2011. Again do I just pull on and remove that center rubber or is their another trick? I have read that I will need to loosen some screws in the back of the wheel but from a quick look today I didnt really see any access.

I will buy myself a workshop manual ASAP quick.

3:Water marks on cloth.? Does anybody have experience with removing these. I am hesitant to get a steam cleaner as I don't want to introduce water into the vehicle.

4 : Hoe do I know if it has an after market CDL?
5 How do I know if it has ACE.

What product if any.........is recomended to keep plastics nice and soft/ looking good. Super cheap auto tyre shine dries stuff out over time and then things look even worse.

6: The alloys have some marks where he sprayed wd 40 or similar they are yellow and do not want to come off. This is on all wheels and is really the only thing that bugs me. How do i restore my rims. I have seen alloy polish and also read about sandpaper and primer and paint?

Where should I go to get a answer that is not influenced by their own need to make a buck.IE if I go to the panel shop does he say I need them painted and if I go to a powder coater does he tell me they need to be re powder coated?

So the adventure begins, I am confident that I have purchased a vechile that with regular preventative maintenance TLC and little bit of luck should give me great place to start my new Roverrific Life. I have read also that the vehicle does not exist until I have posted a photo. Well I haven't had a chance to take any snaps yet but a soon as I do I will post one or two.

I'm sure I will have many many questions."Question Quigly" so I hope to get some great advice and in future pass on to others my experiences of what has worked and what has not.

Any way cheers and see you on the road or range somewhere.

Start with the easy one a good steam cleaner should get the water marks out without leaving water in the car. The SRS light could be as simple as dirty connections get the cd and find the connections and clean them up I assume your horn button is not working? If it stopped at the same time as the SRS light came on then probably the same cause dirty connection or rotary coupling The first thing to do is get a workshiop cd and track down the wiring for both

    Thanks Booger,

CD has been ordered and is on the way. Still reluctant to steam clean. So I will go and see a top shelf detailer and ask what they do.

Today BOTH horn buttons broke and now I have two in my hands.

I have reda around and will try to glue/ silicone/ velco a nylon nut and bolt to the back of the buttons witha lighter spring.

    Thanks for the input.

    Cheers

    Faults

    Hi
The horn buttons are available as a repair kit here in the UK - I can get you a price if you wish.
SRS faults will need to be removed from the ECU even after the fault has been fixed or the light will not go out.

    Hey Mark,

Thanks for the reply. That would be ok if you wanted to pm or post a price.

So if that is the case about the SRS lights then I will need to find some one with a NANCOMM and software here in Tasmania.

    Cheers
