    Fuel filtration Tdi/TD5

    Hi All,

Can someone tell me if TD5's Disco or Defender (or any other model) have a warning light for water in the fuel?

If so, were is the sensor, and can it be retrofitted to a Tdi (Defender if it makes a difference)

The Tdi filtration is a water trap/sedimeter down the back near the fuel tank, I believe this is a CAV/Lucas/Delphi unit. And a spin on cartridge filter on a Bosch head up the front in the engine bay.

The water trap has a casting that looks like it could be drilled and tapped for a switch.
The filter has a bolt in the bottom that could perhaps be replace with a switch, but it look a bit small.

The Tdi and TD5 have different part numbers for the fuel filter.

Thanks for any help you may be able to give.

The TD5 disco has the water senser screwed into the bottom of the fuel filter behind the drivers wheel.. A dash light appears if it sense's water.

I am unsure if all disco's had the water senser but my 2001 did..Some just remove the senser and fit a plastic drain, ( which comes with some brand of filters ) or fit a bolt into it to stop it snapping off in offroad conditions.

    Hope this helps..

    Cheers Ean

    Hi Tony,

Following photos from my Td5 Disco plus a few shots of a new filter (P/N ESR4686<B>) showing water drain plug which is replaced with the water sensor.
    Hope the pics help.

Hi Ean and Roger, thanks for that.

Is that the only filter in the Disco II system?
Roger is the Defender the same, and could you check the thread of the filter/drain screw, I had a look at a spare one and the Tdi filter is M8.

Roger, do know how the switch works? IE is it a float switch or resistance?

I might see if I can track down a second hand one tomorrow.

    Thanks again.

Same in the early td5 defenders (mine has it) but I understand the sensor was done away with, not sure when. I understand it is a resistance switch but I'm no techy.

its not the only filter (there are 2 other strainers but they are not usually serviced items) but it is the only user servicable filter.

from memory it is an internal float sensor.

You dont need to have a fuel water warning light on a TDI, inspect the fuel water seperator and you'll be able to see if you need to drain it, alternatively just add draining 100ml of fluid from the seperator to the weekly checks.

there is a bowl available for the seperator that has a fuel/water float sensor in it as well as one with a preheater to assist in preventing wax formation.

What are the consequences when/if you pick up a load of dirty/watery fuel that the exceed the capacity of the water trap?

This recently happened to my brothers common rail Triton, resulting in a very expensive tow truck ride, followed by an even more expensive repair. Fortunately Mitsubishi picked up the tab under warranty and are taking the matter up with the service station.

You don't have any leads on that one do you?

    Thanks

the consequences are negligible, the engine will stop, you pull over drain the tank and the reprime the fuel system.

    OR if you're lazy...

you'll drain the water, add some fresh dieso, some metho and diesel snot treatment, then crank it till it runs.

the only people who really have to worry about getting more water in the system than its designed to handle are (in no particular order)

people who ford deep and often.
    people who run bio
people who refil from jerries/44's that have been left laying around
people who leave the fuel cap off
people who dont do their servicing properly.

Sensor is a continuity switch ie, two poles where the water is the switch mechanism.
When the water level in the trap gets to a certain level, it makes a contact across the terminals.
    Think EngineSaver sensor
