    Hi Frank,

every time I go into my local Autopro I see that oil going for 109 for 20 litres. I am tempted to give it a whirl as well instead of Penrite HPR diesel 15-50

The website says that it meets these specs:

    - API Ci-4+, CH4/CG4/CF4/SL/SJ

compared to Penrite HPR D 15-50:

    API CH-4/SL

I am still trying to understand what the API codes really mean though, I am getting there...

its not bad oil, we have guys come in that swear by it. aussie made, and the oil gurus at work have nothing bad to say about it, other than the bottles make it look cheaper.

The Penrite API rating has changed from above, the website for HPR DIESEL 15 states: SAE 15W-50, API CI-4/SL, ACEA A3/B4, Ford M2C153F,G/171C, Global DLD-1/3, VW 505.00

I have read online (trustworthy?) that the CI-4/SL is similar to the CI-4+ that the Gulf Western Oil states. The difference is that the Penrite's 'SL' denotes a petrol compatibilty as well, whereas the + on the GW oil apparently means:

Used in conjunction with API CI-4, the " CI-4 PLUS" designation identifies oils formulated to provide a higher level of protection against soot-related viscosity increase and viscosity loss due to shear in diesel engines.
As far as I understand, (not much) shear is the oil's structure being broken down by higher-performance modern engines. (tolerances, compression etc).

That seems to be one of the bigger differences between the two oils as I can see them, the Penrite being somewhat of a benchmark.

Anyone with an opinion about Gulf Western Oil?

    Sam

    Yep ...

Along time ago i tripped over it as a replacement for "Black n Gold" oil I was shoving into an old banger .... Product was a oil for "older engines"

I then started using it on my RRC 3.9 V8 that had 220 on the clock, as it was IMHO showing ring signs of being an older motor ... (slight consumption of oil use)

Motor is now 320k old and performs like new .... Oil pressure gauge still reads as "new motor specs"

    ..... Top oil ....

From their site they grew out of Caltex/Ampol.
    GW History

As such I would expect them to be professional.
