    Possible TD5 defender clutch problem

Hi guys, I had my Defer serviced at M.R Automotive yesterday, and the service report states that my clutch is "weak" and needs monitoring. I've rung M.R this morning to find out exactly what they mean by "weak", just waiting for a call back by the mechanic.

I've never had any problems with it slipping, but it does engage quite high up on the pedal travel - is this a sign of a worn clutch, or some other clutch related issue (a problem with one of the cylinders perhaps)?

    Cheers

I had a mechanic tell me my clutch was getting quite worn down and suggested getting it replaced... so i did it, only to find that it wasn't as worn down as i had thought it might be... it had the same high take up point you describe and wasn't slipping at all. The take up point is now much better (lower) although i suspect the leaking slave cylinder isn't helping things at all... it'll get replaced soon enough. I also replaced a few other bits and pieces while i had the box out... first time i'd ever done something that major and after a few thousand kms all going well... touch wood!

I would be of the mindset to do it myself as I had a motoring organisation do mine to only screw the whole job up and charge stupid money.
I would if in any doubt about the clutch buy one when you can afford to get good quality a one( oe part) then have it in the shed might as well buy a heavy duty clutch fork too as an upgrade

Just spoke to Jason at M.R, he believes it is the diaphram spring that is weakening.

Not sure how much more life it's got left, but it doesn't get driven a whole lot - hopefully I'll get at least another year. It's only got around 135000 on the clock, which seems a bit soon for a clutch replacement. But I've only had it for around 20000 of that, and I've got no idea what the previous 2 owners got up to in it.

They told me a clutch replacement would be around 8-9 hours labour, plus around $500 for the clutch kit, and if the flywheel also needs replaceing, that's another $800-$900 or so. So potentially $2200 or more !

    Cheers

Import the clutch kit and flywheel yourself and pay either MR or a specialty gearbox place $50-$100/hr so about $400-$900 to do it:
    TD5 | Clutch | Defender | Parts & Accessories

It was good that they could tell you it is getting bad but talk to them and say your looking to import the Heavy duty 325GB pound kit(about $500 + postage) which includes a flywheel (compared to the local kit $500+ $800 for a flywheel), among other items, and would they fit it for you.

I did a similar thing with my mech when my steering box was dying as to have it reco-ed here was more than an imported new one! I imported a box, wheel carrier and a service kit as well as bumperrettes(which does not fit on drivers side with wheel carrier!)

Thanks frantic, sounds like a good option, I'll look at that when the time comes.

The Britpart clutch kit is made by Rakeway. You can order directly from them.

I've put one in my Disco (Option 2 Plus) and it's brilliant!

If you are going to do that I would also do the master and slave cylinder and the flexible hose to the slave cylinder.

I did my clutch and gearbox and went up The Cape and had all sorts of problems. $2,000 worth of work and it was the $30 flexible hose that was the not replaced that caused all the problems.
