I had a mechanic tell me my clutch was getting quite worn down and suggested getting it replaced... so i did it, only to find that it wasn't as worn down as i had thought it might be... it had the same high take up point you describe and wasn't slipping at all. The take up point is now much better (lower) although i suspect the leaking slave cylinder isn't helping things at all... it'll get replaced soon enough. I also replaced a few other bits and pieces while i had the box out... first time i'd ever done something that major and after a few thousand kms all going well... touch wood!
