    Starter Motor questions - 300 tdi

    On my D1, the starter motor wont engage under a battery voltage of 12.6v (the solenoid just clicks away) but it works fine if I put a feshly charged battery showing 12.6v or more on it.

    And, above 12.6v, the starter will work OK, however both the battery voltage and the voltage at the high tension connection on the solenoid drop to around 8.7v when the starter is under load.

    Can anyone help by telling me if this is likely to mean;

    (1) the starter motor is on the way out?, or
    (2) the solenoid is on the way out? or
    (2) that the battery doesn't have enough voltage?

    (I had always assumed that 12.6v unloaded meant that battery was OK and that a battery should only drop to about 9.5v under start load)

    I couldn't find anything in RAVE to help

    Firstly, check the earth strap attached to the starter, second check the ACTUAL voltage at the solenoid hot wire when key is turned. It may well be the problem ESPECIALLY if you still have an alarm spider in the system.

    Try running a 12V wire from battery directly to solenoid next time, to prove this theory.

    Not directly related to the battery, but take a look at the earth connection between the starter motor and chassis.

    Mine was not starting too well at one point, I traced it down to this earth lead being half rubbed through on the chassis rail and poorly connected at the chassis end.

    You need to be under the car behind the passengers front wheel looking at the starter motor area to see it.

    thanks for your reply JC,

    by "hot wire" do you mean the battery connection on the solenoid?

    and do you mean the key just "on" or "on with the starter turning" ?

    and yes I haven't disconnected the alarm system (because I don't know how
    )

    - I probably won't get to have another look at it until tomorrow to check what you advised.

    mine did the same thing, it turned out an additional earth strap from the negative terminal to the block was needed, the starter motor kept trying to find an earth and melted the hand brake cable to the nylon sheath. Fitted a new earth band and all was good.

    Get hold of a battery tester. the battery might show 12.6V but it probably has no current/amps. I had the same problem a few months ago whilst out bush. The car wouldn't start withthe key but would run fine with a clutch start. got it back home and started to diagnose the problem. spider was not an issues as I had it fixed a while ago, but checked it anyway and all the relays as well. tried to hump start it with the wifes car but it only marginally helped. Pulled the battery out of the caravan and hooked it up and presto the car starts every time. Put the battery back in the van and got a new battery for the car and no problems since. I have also relocated the spider to under the dash away from direct sunlight and heat from the stereo.
