Personally I always use a sealant as well as the gasket. I use 515 Loctite myself, I have few problems that way.
What's the consensus in regards to using gaskets or sealants or both. Today I've half bolted up the v8 timing cover and water pump and used the gaskets only. I've made sure all surfaces are clean etc. I'm just worried that maybe I should have put sealant as well.

mmm, I think I might unbolt the timing cover & waterpump and put sealant in. I have a tube of Loctite 5920 which should do the trick. I think I was concerned because of the time it would take to figure out which bolt is which for the water pump and timing cover, that the sealant would set before everything is torqued down properly+ the amount of brackets etc to work out.
Also what I've noticed is that the older v belt motor had a stud in the block for one of the timing bolts, wheras the serp motor doesn't. I searched for a good while trying to find the illusive bolt. Then I like at the old motor. grrrrrr, going to have to go to boltmasters and get a bolt to suit thread etc.
I've got another small drama. There is a bracket that bolts to the alternator and power steering pump I think and it uses one of the head bolts as an anchor point. The problem is that I don't want to disturb the stretch head bolt. Would I get away with angle grinding that bit of the bracket?
Most of the genuine LR gaskets that I have used for the TD5 are pretty good on their own and have a coating that does not need any goo. Any doubt use sealant.
