I started fitting the new stuff today , as I received it from Gary yesterday.
It turned out to be you guessed it a frustrating day.
First there was a line in the Rollmaster instructions which said,"you may have to grind the upper part of the timing case on some late model motors."
So I thought I had better measure, and there was not a hope of the chain wheel clearing the dizzy tube. So out with the Dremel and grind away. After about two hours of grind/measure etc, I got sick of the slow pace and got out the air grinder which I should have done in the first place. The 92 has a raised boss which looks like it is a guide for the nylon part of the cam wheel, I had to take all that and then most of the dizzy tube.
Then I thought that I should check the lifter preloads and they were all over 50 thou on both banks. SO I had to make shims and make sure the oil galleries were clear. I tried 20thou and the preloads were still too high so I made more out of 10thou stock.
All this took a lot of time.
I have NO idea why the lifter preloads are so high. The heads are new late 4.6 with only about 6KK on them. I hand ground the valves but no way on earth would you take off 50thou! I measured the head gasket thickness and it was exactly the same as the OEM at AFAIR 47Thou.
All I can think of is either the cam has a bigger base circle, the lifters are too long, or the heads were shaved from new , or the valve heights were never set from new.At least if the valve heights are wrong the shims should help the geometry.LOL.
This preload should have had nothing to do with the cam failure as according to the Tuning Rover V8 book the lifters can take up to 4MM preload , but they sure would pump up.
I have the front on and have refitted the radiator and condensor.
I have yet to remove the sump and clean and reseal it, which I am not looking forward to.
I am getting too old for this .
Regards Philip A
