Diffs/axles for RRC
G'day folks,
As I'm converting to a 351 in my '93 I thought I should beef up both ends of the car at the same time or not? I was thinking of these for both ends...

but what about diffs? I thought of getting a couple of pegged diffs from Ashcroft and maybe one of these at the back..How It Works - KAISER - Differential Locker and a locker in front?
If I were to creep up on this which should I do first? I thought I'd do the back first but is this the wrong way around?
Cheers.

Hi there FIXR7,
Sorry I can't help you with the diff side but I'm interested in your conversion. How far through with it are you?
Cheers

Hi Milld,
It's in the "projects and tutorials" section if you want to have a look.

Hi there,
I have an 86 rangie which I have just installed a defender 110 salisbury in the rear. I had to shorten the tailshaft. I have pegged my own front diff which has a arb locker.
Very happy with the rear diff as it just bolts straight in. The calipers are better as they have a larger piston.
Currently I have a 383 supercharged chev going through a lt230 transfer case which is rear wheel drive. I suggest mod your centre diff to rear wheel drive and update to a defender rear end.
With the power of a 351 you with probably have problems with the center diff spider shafts after a while.
Just through exprience it might be cheaper to by the defender diff because the standard axles would be stronger than the classic hi toughs.
Defender 110 disc brake rear end approx $700
Tailshaft shorten $100-$200

G,day Paul,
this is interesting. I take it the salisbury is available with ABS?
Can you explain the "rear wheel drive" for the centre diff? Do you mean effectively making it 2wd or is something to do with the natural bias of the centre diff to the front?
I see ashcroft do a 4 pin centre diff and there is also a quaife torque sensing centre diff available.
Cheers,
Pete.

Not sure about the ABS but being defender it would probably have it in the later models.
Back to the centre diff, I have an lt230 pre viscious coupling.
How to mod the centre diff to rear wheel drive!
1. remove centre diff out of the transfer case
2. disassemble the centre halves to expose the cross shafts and spider gears.
3. remove the cross shafts and small side spider gears
4. with the large spider on the hand brake side, this one needs to be welded in to the carrier ( make sure its prep and free from oil etc). Make sure you use a long bolt and clamp spider gear firmly in its housing.
5. The front larger spider gear just sits in the housing as before. What you have to do is weld a flat washer to one of the cross shafts which prevents the front gear from falling out of the housing.
6. Bolt centre diff halves together.
Note: make sure front spider gear can spin freely without binding on the flat washer from the cross shaft.
Now your centre diff is rear wheel drive and will lock into 4wd as before.

Thanks Paul,
I have converted to LT230 also so i could do that. Is there a particular reason you wanted to go with 2WD? Is it because the diff ratio can't be guaranteed to be the same front to rear anymore so you'd be overworking the centre diff?
I must admit I regret changing to the 230, it's noisier and not as smooth a car since the change.
Cheers,
Pete.

I went 2wd as I was worried about the centre spider gears.
It handles alot better know under acceleration which doesn't pull side to side and also the front wheel doesn't spin. Even normal driving it handles better and you can have a bit of fun in the mud as well.
With the 351 your better off with the lt230.
