Clunk heard when selecting gears
Hi all, like the title mentions clunk can be heard and felt when selecting reverse, not quite as bad in D. Uni’s seem fine also transfer lever is starting to pop out of selection from time to time after about 50-100m when off-road. No problem on road, from what I have searched here it’s not an uncommon problem just wondering what the problem usually turns out to be and how much it has cost to be repaired. Vehicle is a 98 disco1 3.9 Auto.
Cheers

when shifting from hi to low and vice versa......keep pressure on the low range lever as you put the box back into gear.......
this will ensure it engages fully.......
with manuals....when changing from hi to low and vice versa.....put the box in 1st gear....then put pressure back on the little lever as you ease the clutch out a little.....
as for the clunk.....that could be in one of about 7 spots.......
you will pretty much need someone under the car to listen where its coming from.....
i dont mean under the wheels.....i mean in either a pit or a 4 post hoist.....

Thanks for the tip I will give it a go the next time I go offroad.
Carefully had a good listen and look today the sound is definately coming from the transfer box region. With the brakes applied firmly both prop shafts rotate between 1/8 and a 1/4 of a turn is this normal?

for a land rover it pretty much is......its backlash in the diff.......
also.....worn splines and flanges on the rear will give noise and add to the freeplay........
