    TD5 buildup for more pep

    Gidday m8s,

I just picked up my first td5 ever, a 2000 Disco, auto trans. She has 270k km on her but seems to have been well looked after by dealerships, as she had a corporate owner. For example, the turbo looks new, and all the hoses and clamps too. I would tell you about the trans fluid shape but LR in their wisdom deleted the dipstick so I have to schedule lift time to do that and fully service the trans.

Here in France I hear tell that the td5 can put out 240hp and still be very reliable. Do we have a forum on this topic, or a good thread somebody can point me to?

I see that big old threaded rod on the wastegate linkage, beckoning me to twist it a bit. I'm an old hotrodder at heart. But I don't want to go at this like a kid and pop off my exhaust manifold studs in a week or two.

I got the blasted EGR defeated right away. What other concrete steps would you recommend for a bit more poke out of the td5?

We have no vendor in France for a plug-in solution to "chip" the motor; they all want to crack open the housing and solder in the engine computer. I do not like that idea. Maybe ozzies can recommend a vendor down under with a plug-in solution good for another 50hp or so, given stronger exhaust studs.

Will the auto trans hold up to more power? Or should I plan on investing in a kit there too so it generates less heat and lives longer? Any vendors to recommend?

Reno, a lucky bastard american married to a beautiful french girl.

I should mention, with no small amount of pride, that my vehicle is one of the 6 baby blue LRs that were featured in Fosters Beer ads here in France. At one point blonde models in tiny bikinis were poised on my car for the ads. Alas, the blondes were not still in the car when I bought her

Do we need to post a hundred or so before we get to have a sig file?

Buy a copy of Landrover owner or landrover monthly, there are a multitude of suppliers who will cater to your every wish in the U.K, ranging from paddocks, devon, rimmers etc to specialty engine places. The only thing is with the earlier TD5 they have to add a chip but the later models could be flash tuned. For more go look to a larger intercooler and a straight through exhaust(maybe a stainless one if you get into snow/salt etc and maybe 3inch pipe from the 2.5 original ), but I dont know the french reg.'s about that. Maybe a tranny cooler as well depending on driving. Have a look if there are any 4x4 clubs/ LR clubs in your region they would also help.

Here's the ultimate insult to my hdj80, as he was forced to tow home his own replacement. Note, no blondes.

Folks on the US Landy forums all said "nice house!" Well, it's the neighbors' house. Ours looks a lot more like a 4x4 nut lives there ... firewood and old LR chassis and the Rangie v8 buggy.

Now the 80 is up for sale, a shame really, but it's overkill for me with its 160L LR tank, etc. I never leave the county, and if I did north Africa is the last place I'd go. Queensland, yes!

    Found a tuning power box!

Seems this little bugger by PSI Motorsport is just what I wanted, and I ordered one up today. Pretty fair price too. Read what the pommie press said about it here: The turbodiesel transformer - Telegraph
