Question Why do TD5 Air Flow Meters Fail????

Ive just had to replace mine, which led me to think why they fail and why are they so expensive??? The original one lasted 4 years and 80,000km.

I could understand having to replace them if they could be classed as a consumable (brakes, clutch, oil etc etc). But these things only have air whizzing through it - how debilitating could that be???

On the bright side, with a new unit fitted, even at tickover Faultmate MSV-2 is now reporting air flowing ino the engine at a significantly higher rate than it was!

It's probably more vibration that kills them. And heat shock from the heated element/s.
MAFs are pretty sensitive bits of equipment, that can detect a valve opening and closing. Which probably explains why they are so expensive.

Look on the bright side. On some Mercedes it's a service item and you won't get much change out of five hundy for one.
