hub seal: did I push in to far?

hey all, Im in the middle of doing the rear hub seal on my 1998 Def110 c/chassis. It has a MD rear locker/axles etc and runs oil into the wheel bearings. So I am doing what landrover call the inner seal, the large one inside the back of the hub. After disasembly and clean, I fitted the hub seal, Part# RTC3511 and used a baked bean can to press it in, by hand, nice and square(as best I could). I think I pushed it in to far. I believe there is a shoulder inside before the inner wheel bearing and I think it is seated against this...

nope,,, well maybe, the depth to face is 4mm but Im assuming that the difference on the ruler vs the hub is parralex error

slide the ruler across the hub face the seal should juuust touch it.

I've seen recommendations of everything from flush to leave a 5mm lip. The ones I've put in have varied through that scale. I suspect that as longs as it's square and has a good surface to seal to it doesn't matter. significantly.

I'm sure more opinions will be along shortly.

I just put new seals in the rear of the 110 disc hubs. Going by the pictures it looks ok. The seals need to be pushed down to that inner square shoulder.

what are you calling "face"of seal? the little flap/lip that covers the spring, or, down in the trough?(were the rule is in the pic?)

the little flap/lip over the spring is approx 3mm from the top of the hub and the trough where the rule is, is approx 6mm from the top of the hub.

lay the ruler on its edge on the hub, does it rub across the lip of the seal (and are those double lip, double retainer seals, if not you have them in inside out)
wiping the ruler across the face of the seal evenly touches the lip of the seal you're good to go.

yes there is a lip+spring on both sides. As I said above, the top of that lip, that covers the spring, is 3mm below the top edge of the hub. I installed this seal in the same direction as the one I took out. I did look at it carefuly before removal, and noted the same brand and numbers cast into the seal.....

I think that what Dave is saying is that the specification is for the distance from the outer lip of the seal to the lip of the hub is 4mm,which puts the inner lip of the seal(the part with the spring) will then be parallel with the outer lip of the hub.In reality,as long as the inner lip of the seal is NOT protruding out past the metal edge of the hub, then you will have no problem.
