The primary pinion housing needs to come off first - the one with the 7 or so nuts holding it in place. However; as you correctly guessed, this leaves the gearbox in a partially dismantled state - not in a condition to be freighted,

Is there a trick to removing the bell housing? It is a S3 gearbox with a S2 bellhousing that was mated to a holden conversion, it is destined to be fitted to a 4 cyl standard engine. Undid the 4 bolts that hold the bell housing to the box but it only comes off a short amount. The box is to be freighted so if I send without the bell housing are the innards going to fall out, or is it better sent complete? I wanted to keep the bell housing since it matches the holden kit I have.
Does the clutch withdrawl mechansim have to be removed from inside the bell housing first? It has the side mounted type with vertical slave cylinder. Supposedly the bell housings are interchangeable so where am I going wrong here?

And once the pinion housing comes off doesn't the nut on the front of the layshaft have to come off as well?
