    RRC Steering Drop Arm Stuck

Anyone got any ideas for removing the steering drop arm from an 89 RRC?
Mine is stuck on hard - have sheared two bolts so far on my puller - not a really heavy duty one. Tried some clouting to the sides of the 'eye' on the drop arm whilst under as much pulling tension as I could raise, but I'm reluctant to hit it too hard for fear of damage to delicate steering box seals and bearings. Also I don't have a source of heat. Wise old methods greatly appreciated.

I had the same drama. Tried heating it with no sucess. I ended up getting the ****s and cutting it off with an angle grinder. You need to be careful not to cut too far though.

Put pressure on with the puller, as much as possible. Get 2 ball peen hammers and hit (as hard as you can) with ball end, one from each side on the thinnest part of the droparm surrounding the shaft. Takes practice but try to get both hammers to hit at the same time. You'll get twice the shock on the droparm and none on the shaft bearings etc. If timed correctly.

    hehe......thats pretty normal........

we used to use a 10 tonne hydraulic puller......wound up to the max.....and it still wouldnt pull it off.......
once it was wound up to its maximum pressure......it was hammer time.......

just make sure you leave the nut on so the arm doesnt fly off and hit you in the face.......

heres a link to the hydraulic pullers im talking about..........

Thanks jskerm, will try again - could be difficult to get two clouts on it simultaneously as there's not much space around it. I'm leaving it overnight with the puller screwed up hard, to see if time and some change of temperature work some magic on it.

I had the steering box out on mine, and it still took a 20tonne press to remove it at the steering place.

Thanks to all for sharing your experience. Now I'm really sh****ng myself!
Has anyone ever replaced the ball joint with the drop arm in situ....? Even more improbable!

It can be difficult - if your efforts overnight don't prove fruitful, send a PM as I have the 10 ton kit (And not too far away). As for the ball joint, originally it was replaceable in situ, but sometimes people welded them in.

I assume you are referring to the pitman arm? Not sure what the access is on the RR but I have done many a car one with a long piece of steel from under the bonnet and whacked it with a large sledge hammer.
