    Maxi Drive Axle Leaks

OK I have an 86 RRC front axle housing with maxi drive centers and shafts which leak water.

Have done 2 oil changes and little off road (2-3 trips with water involved up to mid wheel) and found water in the oil in the front housing only (rear is dry).

So my qu is where is the water likely to be getting in on a regular basis? How test for and how treat?

Do the maxi drive vacuum units leak water and if so how seal?

    Thanks for suggestions

Wouldn't be as simple as a diff breather issue? Have you extended the breather to a higher point well above water level?

If water leaks IN then oil will leak OUT.
Sometimes the Box that is welded to the housing will leak if poorly welded and the fix is to spread around a bit of silastic.
Graeme Cooper had to have about 3 goes at mine before success.

I would be looking at the swivels and the breather first. If water can leak in, oil will leak out.

The only place the cylinder can leak is where it is bolted to the mount block. Or the mount block can have been welded badly - so it becomes porous.

If you have the MD strengthened/laminated diff pan, they are often full of pinholes.

    That's what I was thinking.

I always liked my step fathers answer that when they came to a creek they'd stop and boil the billy back in the day, just to let all the compartments cool before fording.

    Thanks Guys

Swivel Housing DO NOT have water in them. Oil is milky in main diff/axle only.

This diff has seen a lot of hot dumpings and never leaked until very recently - Rear is dry and had same treatment - no obvious leaks.

Rangy01 - I will remove the breather hose and test if it is split or if that leaks - it could have been damaged at some point I guess

We have replaced the whole right hand swivel twice (it is our quick fix at comps if break a CV and need to change between runs - we pull whole right hand assembly off and bolt a disco one on and drive more sedately).

Should there be a seal where the swivel housing bolts to the axle housing?

isuzurover - this is a set up that has been used for years and never leaked so doubted it could be a poor weld etc UNLESS axle housing has twisted/moved somehow.

I thought I did see a leak from where the diff bolts to the housing - but could have been other oil as power steering pump connection leaks and needs to be fixed

    Couple of pics attached

    Thanks for comments and suggestions

Instead of removing the breather hose to check it, what about just pressurising it with a low pressure (3 or 5 psi ??) then run over the whole axle/breather etc with soapy water. Should show up any leaks that are above the normal oil level. Anything below you'd think would show up as an oil leak when it sits with hot oil in it.
