    5th gear whine

I'm sending the 2004 Td5 110 in for a service tomorrow and getting a few things looked at - main concern is that the last month it developed a whine in 5th gear. It only appears to be this gear and disappears when clutching in, increases with revs. Changed box gear and transfer case oil. No difference. Thinking maybe spigot bearing?? But wanted to check with you guys first. I like to have a little idea about these things before talking to the shop, so I don't get taken advantage of.

    Thanks.

It is possible that your 5th gear layshaft bearing looks like this.

Is there a similar noise in reverse too?

I don't think it is there in reverse. Mind you I reverse pretty slow, so it may not be that evident. But on face value it seems as though it's only 5th gear.

The vehicle had done about 112,000 in the hands of the original owner and about another 50,000 since I bought it.

While the vehicle is fitted with a towbar, there is no evidence on the towball of it having been used a lot. A brief conversation about the vehicle with a part time employee of the original owner also gave no indication it had been used for heavy towing.

It had obviously not done any extreme 4WDing and may not have ever been offroad until I bought it.

The noise appeared to have developed very quickly, but I might have missed it in the early stages because I first noticed it when I was going a little faster than normal and using a bit more throttle than normal in 5th gear.

In fact there is nothing in particular about the distance the vehicle had covered or the way it had been driven (as far as I know) to explain why the bearing should have so much wear.

I had a whine in my R380 (manual D2) which turned into a slap after a while, the noise only appeared in 5th gear and went away when you pushed the clutch in, turned out to be the support bearings between 2nd and 3rd gear

5th gear has not been touched, 281,000ks, all heavy towing.

From what I can gather, 5th gear in the R380 fitted to the D2 and late model Defenders it is very rare for them to fail.
