    Steering Disco series 1

Hope someone can help me out with this one.

A few weeks ago I noticed that the steering was pulling to the right to a point where I can't drive with one hand on the wheel. The steering wheel looks like about 10-20 degrees off centre to the left when driving straght.
I've had a look underneath and can't see anything bent. I have also had it in for a wheel align but they said they cant do anything with it and that the vehicle is lower on the right hand side (as in leaning to the right).
Got the tape measure out and measured top of wheel arch to the ground and there is a 1" difference. Got underneath and did the same but at the spring mount and the difference was about 12-15mm. Checked the back springs and they are approx 15-18mm lean to the right also.
I have the original factory fitted springs vintage 1998 so about 13yr old. have new Ironman Foam cell shocks that were replaced about 6 months ago.
The only thing I can think of that might have caused it was I loaded the back up with approx 450kg of bricks one day after a trip Darwin-Melb-Darwin in July.

have Ironman Springs on order to correct the lean, but could this be causing the car to pull to the right??????
Don't wasnt to go to a suspension place if I can fix it myself.

    cheers

    LUKE

The lean on the body could be putting extra weight on that side, so I reckon it could possibly be causing it to pull that way.

The springs do sag over time and quite often end up leaning one way or the other, so a replacement set is probably a good idea.

I would think that your steering problem may not be totally the springs though.

Has the steering wheel always been off-centre?

If it was fine and is now off, then something has probably bent.

I would be taking a second look at the track rod, the straight one at the back that goes between the front wheels.

It bends somewhat easily and causes pulling to one side when even slightly bent.

Such a big pull would usually be caused by bending the drag link behind the axle as this would put the alignment out.You should know if you whacked the drag link while offroading.
RR and Discos have VERY substantial components in their steering and suspension and usually do not suddenly start to pull.
Other causes include worn bushes in the front or rear suspension and bending a mounting point on the body.
Really if you cannot ID the problem straight away IMHO you should go to a Land Rover Specialist for diagnosis.
I am surprised an alignment place refused to align it , as just about all Land Rovers lean one way or the other.

Thanks guys, Kmart Auto in their defence did try and get it to go straght but probably wern't cluey enough to find out why so put the ball back in my court. Can't remember if I have hit anything lately unless it was those pot holes on the Stuart Hwy between Darwin and Alice?
I'll give it another go underneath and see if I can figure it out. Will bear with it until I fit the new Coils.

    Cheers

Just had another good look. Nothing bent, but did notice the tie rod ball joint rubbers are knackered although they are still tight. might pay to change them as well.

    Thanks Boofdtl.
Lewy, I have even tyre wear across the front. The R/H inner and the L/H outer are wearing out quicker as the tyres are pointing to the right as I try and go straight. After thinking about it for the last couple of hours I am tending to say it's something with the steering and not suspension. Going to try and swap tyres left to right and see if anything changes.

Check the rear bushes (rubbers) in the front LH track bar, may have popped one and it's allowing the left front to move forward, check them all as it could happen the opposite way as well, Regards Frank.

A frame balljoint and badly worn panhard rod bushes can cause steering issues so get a big screw driver or tyre lever and see if anything is loose.
