Hi james

Noted Allan, I'll put wheel bearings on the list of possibles
I had sim probs with my 97 .... vibrations came up from under the floor and thru the steering secondly...
Chris Hardy solved it .. double cardon prop shaft ..... brought a good second hand unit from TRS in S.A and took it to Veem and they balanced it and Chris fitted it up and never a problem since .
Thanks Sith. For something like a propshaft, a properly balanced second hand one is a good idea.
James, about 4 or 5 years ago my defender had the same hum,vib and it was the rear uni, mine had one cap rubber missing and filled with dirt and unbalanced the shaft. Also check the driveshaft flange bolts, the handbrake ones undo over time and replace with new ones if thier loose. Pat
Have a look at the tail shaft uni joints, had similar prob with my defender, noticed a weird squeeking noise and vibration, note: do both tail shafts both have similar wear,,,, if a tail shaft comes loose it will cost $$$ instead of a simple bearing renewal.
Yep. Reckon I'd have a good look at propshafts and uni joints.
G'day James
Mate I had the same frustrating drama a couple of years ago. I changed all the uni's, wheel bearings had the propshafts rebalanced had the diffs checked.
On it went untill I bought some new tyres apperently the old ones were "scalloped" which caused the symptoms you are experiencing.
I hope this helps mate.
Chers Dave;)
I agree with the people suggesting you check the prop UJs. Make sure the wheels are free and off the ground when you check them.
And another thing is important make sure that if you seperate the front tail shaft make, sure it goes back together the same way, I did it once and had to remove and do again, out of balance.
