A mother can just sense when something is not quite right with her children, always atuned while barely being aware of it. Landrover drivers know and understand this phenomenum.
There's a drive humm/vibe in my car that wasn't there before. Its a 96 300tdi about 240k on the clock.
It is noticable most when the car is rolling along (ie not under power) or when slowing down in gear. It is not limited to any one gear but of course rolling along the higher gears are where it seems to occur most. Of course it could be happening under power but it is covered by other things going on, I'm not certain
It's reasonably high frequency vibration, a humm not a daddadadadada I'm no expert but I don't think it is a tyre weight or somesuch but that will be the first thing a I'll rule out when I can get the wheels checked. I might be wrong but I don't feel it is roadspeed related.
Wheel allignment? No, don't think so, she goes pretty straight up the road with the hands off.
Any thoughts from afar?
It's still very much drivable. I'm probably going to make the jump to a D4 next year, since Ive made that decision Ive had the head off and done a prematurely aging timing belt. Now I see some kind of driveline rebuild. Someone's going to get a nice Defender next year when it's all been fixed.

What happens when you coast along in neutral with the engine idling? Is the noise still there? (sounds like it from whatyou have said). What about rolling along with the engine switched off?
I think the engine may be the least likely source of the noise. More likely diffs, t-case, uni joints, etc.

Thanks. I'll try it tonight on the freeway , but my bet is that it won't, at least not at idle. My gut feeling (and I only have that, being a mechanical ignoramous) is that the engine is fine but it's the drive system that had got itself worn somehwere. Diffs, t-case, unijoints...

IME the most likely candidate is propshaft UJs. Get underneath, check they all have grease nipples fitted, then grab each one and see if there is any play.
If the propshaft UJs and splines are ok, and the noise/vibe still happens with the engine off, then you can remove the props one at a time, and drive around with CDL engaged, to see where it is coming from.

Do as Isuzurover has suggested.
But I would be looking for any out of balance in the prop shafts.
To do this get underneath, but with your wheels chocked safely, then not in gear and without the hand brake on.
Then grab hold of each prop shaft in turn and twist, looking for any movement inside the uni joints and paying particular attention to the handbrake drum, as the large nut under the yoke that fastens the flange to the output shaft could have come loose.

Re, the noises. Apologies for being unclear, the noises are things in the cabin. like the lid on the battery box, the uhf mike in its clip etc responding "harmonically" to the vibrations IMO. There is no rattling clunking etc coming from the under the car that I can hear.
I feel vibes through the steering and up through the floor, but not as severe as I'm might be making it sound. It's just Not Quite Right.

Still do that check ,as the harmonic vibrations can only happen when there is a source.
Do you run an agressive type of tread on your tyres and have you pumped them up again recently?
Tyre tread wears to a certain place and when the profile is altered slightly by increasing the pressure, this will cause that type of noise and vibration, that you have described also.

Hi Arthur, thanks, yes I'll be taking everybody's advice and gettingunder to check the prop UJs etc. As you say the vibes are definitely new and definitely there so there is source.
The tyres are Bridgie 607s at about 35 and 45. Now the car is empty of the camping gear perhaps 45 is a bit high but Ive run it at that before with no vibes, and the sticker says 48. Maybe a tyre is damaged bt I don't think inflation is the issue.
I just had an idea to explain it, a certain times it feels like it's hitting a rumble strip, only about 25% of the intensity of a rumble strip. (No, I'm not hitting a rumble strip)
