play in the hubs could be wheel bearing looseness or worn out
Hi,
I recently purchased a 2003 td5 with 119000ks in good condition apart from the hubs and an unusual widing sound.
The hubs make a clunking sound when put in gear, I have removed the hub caps and there is some movement between the axel and hub when I rock the car.
When on bitumen or dirt there is a distinct winding sound during acceleration, when I back off the accelorator the noise stops so i dont think its the tyres.
Any advice would be great, I plan on changing all the hubs but not sure what to replace them with? I dont have a clue what the winding sound is
Thanks
Daniel

Winding sound could be diff.. have you tried high range, low range?
Hercules: 1986 110 Isuzu 3.9 (4BD1-T)
Brutus: 1969 109 ExMil 2a FFT (loved and lost)
Thanks Guys,
I have ran in low gear but it was off road and hard to haer any noise, the winding noise is most noticeable on the bitumen around 40km/hr and over and is only when I accelerate.
Not sure what you mean by winds down after switches off?
Apparently the wheel bearings were replaced not too long ago.
Would lifting the wheel and testing for any wobble indicate a bearing problem. My 110 had the same clunk and I ended up getting the hubs replaced but this time i would like to do the repairs myself
I was referring to winding down sound in the engine compartment - obviously it's not that so forget about my earlier comment

You can check that the transfer case is unlocked ?
the flanges wear out on the splines and make a clicking noise.......between the flange and the axle......
the whining noise could be in the box or transfer........or even one of the diffs.....
get it to a workshop and have it diagnosed.....and also get a quote from them.....
then take it somewhere else and get a second opinion......and quote.....
its hard to diagnose what the noises are over the net.......
