    Woofing Defender 300Tdi

I was just reading a thread about vacuum pumps and a comment Justin made reminded me of something I meant to ask about but forgot.

I had the head off for a new gasket before the big trip, timing belt and full service done. All was well when I picked the car up and I drove it about a bit and noticed a woofing sound through the snorkel. Car idles fine and we leant over and had a real good listen but could not find a noise anyhwere else yet you dont need to get very close to the snorkel head before you hear a woo woo woo woo.

It does seem to be taking air in through the snorkel. A look underneath shows that one of the supports for the piping to the engine has broken, but moving it around doesn't seem to change anything. It doesn't look broken down there and there is no hissing.

It doesn't seem to be a problem , it's just a new noise since the gasket. I know breathing impacts fuel economy and I am tight as a fish's clacker.

Thanks for any advice or previous experience.

Valve clearances need to be redone again after head removal/ refit and especially after about 150 or so KM.
This will cause a pulsing woof woof sound in the air intake.

Thanks Justin. Would it effect fuel economy?

Yes it does, not usually by HEAPS, but noticeable if you are open road driving. Similarly, you will also note a lack of power at the same time, especially if hills are encountered...
