    What Parts Do I Need?

Doing my TDI timing belt. I know that I need to replace the drive gear on the crank as mine has no flange on it. What other changes were made to help with preventing belt wear.

I changed the belt and put the flanged gear on my '96 300 TDi back in '99 and a couple of thoudand kms later the belt was nearly worn away and the flnaged pieces were laying the bottom of the timing cover.

I ended up putting on a new timing cover and it had done at least 100,000kms when I sold it in 2003 with no problems.

INHMO If your timing cover is warped it will need changing. This eas one of those manufacturing defects LR never covered.

The news isn't all bad - the main change was moving the flange from the tensioner/idler set to the crank. It's normal for all belt driven timing sets to change the idler/tensioner every 3 or 4 belts. The main kit that's widely available has a new crank pulley, tensioner, idler, bolt and cover gasket. It's advisable that you also replace the camshaft oil seal and crank inner & outer seals. If your 300tdi somewhat chews belts ( As different to really chews like Mr G said) another kit has a bracket to bolt to the injection pump.

Mine is an early 300tdi - and it's belts last 100k no probs.

I assume you are doing a 300 Tdi, in which case you want ***wrong item*** which includes a modified pulley to stop the belts wearing.

This is the kit you want. Cheaper too.

Make sure that whatever you get the crank pulley is a one piece cast part, not pop rivetted like the LR one. Back in the UK Bearmack used to do the complete kit for 70GBP which included everything you needed (apart from the timing pins).
