Avon Tyres. Anyone had any experiences good or bad?
I'm looking at possibly getting a set of Avon tyres for the series 3. In a 7.50 16 tyre these were apparently OEM tyres originally fitted by Landrover in the UK but not sure if this is true or not.
Has anyone had any experience with this brand either good or bad? They are used and quite a good price for a set of 4 but the UK landy owners talk about them not being very good in mud or snow (not really an issue here - more important to know how well they wear and grip in the wet)
Any opinions welcome to help decide the issue.

Only ever used Avon race tyres and they were very good, much better than UK race Dunlops.
FWIW Avon is owned by Cooper Tire US these days.

If their 4 wheel tyres are like their motorcycle tyres then...
They'll stick like the proverbial, shed water well... And wear fast...

Avon Rangemaster have been an OE fit on the Defenders in the past.
Not used Avon rubber on a Landy, have used them on a regular car and have been very pleased with the results.
FWIW - Avon are based a couple of miles from my place too.

I had Rangemasters on my 109 and they were ok. Nothing great, they did the job. They didn't wear much over the 2-3 years I had them fitted. But, as mentioned they are crap in mud and snow. In they wet they weren't brilliant, but this wasn't a major issue as the SIII rarely got fast enough for it to be a problem.
In short, they are fine for road use.

So is the age of the tyres a big concern? I have no idea how old but the tyres in question have been on a truck and no idea how old they are. Treads look ok but some folk say that after 6 years or so tyres are past their use by date. Does this matter as much with tubed tyres?

Personally, I just go by the condition of the tyre. If it's showing signs of perishing, replace it. But that's my own personal opinion..
