    It's pretty easy!

    Wait till it's cool.

Get new copper washers for the oil feed, and a new gasket for the drain. also new downpipe gasket and the gasket between the manifold and the turbo.

    Remove engine cover

Remove inlet hose and move out the way.

unbolt heat shield. 2 bolts into water pipe from top, one accessed from right hand side of the sheild

Unbolt down pipe (3 17mm nuts from memory) you should get enough movement without removing any other mounts on the exhasut

    unbolt drain (2 8mm bolts)

unbolt oil feed (13mm banjo bolt)

remove small vacuum hose from turbo

unbolt the 3 nuts (13mm) holding turbo to manifold and remove

Refit other way around with new gaskets and washers

Dont over tighten the banjo bolt.

The 2 bolts in the drain a bit fiddly to refit.

    good luck

It's not too hard. We sell quite a few TD5 turbo kits, with all you need to do the job. It can be done by a competent mechanic on the drive.

What's wrong with the existing one Newton?

The impeller shaft is loose, probably bearings, but my disco smokes with power loss, and a noise when i give it some, especially under strain.

I took it to a LR Mechanic and he also mentioned it was the turbo.

I received my Garrett turbo and gaskets, and should hopefully be done during the week.

Thank you for all your inputs and interest

    Cheers

Bearings are loose as they are a hydraulically balanced sleeve bearing.
Oil pressure takes up what looks like slop in the bearing when engine is running.

If you had a ball bearing shaft then any movement would be cause for concern but with the Garrett, unless you get wheel to housing contact, a few mm is normal.
