Thread: Squeezing two decent sized batteries into a Defender battery box?

A few photo's of my battery layout, looking toward the door



Neat fit with room for some spares


The batteries box underneath the floor.



The control switches for; top just visible - driving lights, left - two way switch down for fog lights and up for inverter, centre - compressor, right - hazards. Also seen is a boost gauge ( will be changing for EGT gauge ).
The old jocks are the rag I use when on the rare occasion the tank needs filling with diesel!

Hi All

I plan on taking some time off work tomorrow morning (cough...cough oh my sore throat)...to have a play with the batteries to see if the cables will reach when I change their position. I like the idea of having two batteries (2 x N70's like 87county's picture).

I will get some pictures up tomorrow night.

FWIW - You can get 3x regular batteries in there (I used Optimas).

I used to have a red-top as the main SLI battery and then the other 2x yellow tops, in parallel and on a split charge, for powering everything else (winch, fridge, sounds, etc...).

Camel Landy I reckon I saw an old post of yours with the 3 batteries fitted. Just curious as to why you now say you "Used" to have 3 batteries fitted. What happened or have you sold the vehicle?
The reason I am asking is that I have to refit my dual battery system in a 2002 Def 110.

I did have two large Exides in the box but when the starter motor melted it blew the top of one of them so used the second aux battery as the main to get us home from FNQ.

So now in process of redesigning dual battery set up.

Three of them Optimas would be great but it is a big outlay if they are not up to the job?

i have 3 batteries in my 110 2 century 100 amp agm and a optima red top cant refit tin cover though

FWIW - I have tried Optima & Oddessey batteries and both sets have **** themselves! I can only think that they don't like being wired up in parallel??

Currently I have a pair of red-tops (only coz I had a spare red-top kicking around... As you do!!) on a split charge but I will be replacing the one serving the accessories with a pair of lead-acid batteries (Type72).

That way, I'll end up with the red-top as an SLI and a pair of lead-acids, wired in parallel, for the accessories. I'll have a split charge between the SLI & accessories circuits.

In my puma I have the original Varta starting battery plus a 100 Ah CAT battery (part No. 175-4370).
They are both starting type batteries and I have them wired parallel with NO isolator.

I removed the original steel battery tray and made one out of timber to suit using threaded rod and steel flat to hold down the batteries.

My inpiration came from this South African website, PBE: The Outdoor Power Specialists! The website has good photos of defender installations.

job done.....in a hurry....

Fitted both N70Z sized batteries - one dedicted deep cycle 105amp/hr and one cranking battery.

Now to clean up the spaghetti... I am thinking of getting two of these:

Anyway, here is a picture of the install. Had to fabricate/weld up a new hold down bracket, but I am happy now that they are secure. I still have a sheet of this rubber covering the batteries just in case
