    Turbo lag

Coming home from Vic 10th Birthday bash last W/end, towing my newly purchased small poptop van (about 1.3ton all up) became a little embarassing.
Starting from the lights on any incline was quite a struggle. D1 300 tdi.
Rev it like hell & drop the clutch isnt the answer (I hope).
Looking 4 suggestions to increase bottom end power.
I realise it should'nt spool up till about 1800rpm, but mine seems to be even higher.
    Cheers Dean.
Ps I spose the bigger tyres & air con did'nt help any, but I did'nt think it would be that bad!

Learn how to shift from low range to high on the roll. Start in second low and then double clutch to shift into high range. There was a thread on that topic last week.
Or fit an auto, they excel at hill starts.

This made me chuckle just a little bit. Are you running 235/85s still? I found with that size, towing + aircon became a bastard. Mine's an auto so the problem is at the other end, chronic bogging down on hills at 100kmhr.

Have you tweaked yours? A good adjustment of the stop screw helps it off the line.

I'm now running an even larger size and finding the need to lockout overdrive around town, but as you know I have a good set of 29" BFGs for whenever I need to tow.

Put a VNT on it and a 2.5 exhaust

Dean, as bee utey said, second/low starts are normal in a stock 300Tdi Defender when towing, so if you have 235/85's with the 1.22:1 t/case it'd be mandatory, or as you say, a fist full of revs and slip the clutch a bit.

    Thanx 4 the replies.
I can appreciate the low to high shift would work, but what a PITA that would be on a regular basis.
It already has a larger exhaust & Mitsubishi turbo, the last readout on the Dyno had the boost at 20psi.
Torque readout was 210nm@76kph in 4th.
    Power was 35kw@84kph in 4th.
These were the figures after adjustment, up from
    Torque 160nm@74kph
    Power 26kw@80kph.
The increased figures were substantial on paper, & they also felt substantial in reality.
He also mentioned that it would also be beneficial to replace the original injectors. The car, 97 D1 has still ony 120,000km's to date.
FGS, its only 1.3t that I want to pull!
Has anyone got a theory as such re nm per weight towed being generally acceptable.
Joel, I'll now swap back from my 235/85's to my old faithfull 245/70 bfg at's.
You cant still possably have those tyres.
    Cheers Dean.
