    Oil Contamination

    Hi there All,

I've been helping NWalker (Newton) to identify a problem with his D2 TD5. Under load it starts to knock and plumes of black/grey smoke pours out the back this also causes power loss. I once flicked it into neutral under these conditions and the revs started to run away. He replaced the turbo after he had it at one of the LR specialists in Perth (Who quoted him in excess of $2500for just the turbo without labor) indicated it was a warn turbo.

Unfotunately it wasn't the problem and we were back to square one. Today we decided to take it one step at a time and try and eliminate certain areas one at a time by either removing them or swapping it out with my TD5 Fender. First was the air filter and associated intake. We removed the intake hose to the MAF and went for a drive. Same problem, knocking noise with smoke. Pulled over and it started to over rev even without ignition . It only lasted for 5-10 seconds then died off. Everything seemed to be ok as it did start after a couple of tries.

So back to the garage and onto the forum. After some research and reading some horror stories of TD5's self destructing we had a look at the oil .........
All 20 odd liters of it . He didn't have diesel in his oil, it was oil in his diesel. We did service our vehicles about 5 months ago so it took about 3-4 months for it to get that bad. We drained the "diesel" from the sump and filter and filled it up with a "Special" from a spare shop, took it for a drive and the symptom is gone. No knocking or smoke.

As I said, the symptom is now gone but we still need to find to problem. As we have it, it could one or more of the following:

    Injector "O" rings
    Injectors
    Cracked Head

Our plan of attack is to:
1 - Remove the injectors and have them tested.
    2 - Replace the "O" rings.
3 - Inspect the head and have a pressure test done.
4 - Put it all back together and have a Fuel Pressure test done.

If anybody out there can shed some light on this problem from experience/knowledge or point us in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Also where we could have the injectors tested and the fuel pressure test done over in Perth.

    Cheers, Jurgens/Newton.

United fuel injection, or MTQ are the places to speak to about diesel injectors and turbo diesels. also A1 inejction behind turbotech has a pretty good rep, but never used them before.

on a side note, MTQ have TD5 turbo's on the back of their current "Mates Rates" flyer for $1000. probably a trade price though.

I would consider the basics first and removed the injectors -

Check for cracks in the cyl head injector bore (most common spot for cracks)

If no cracks replace the injector o-rings and seals.

Flush engine as best as possible with oil a couple of times.

Hopefully no other damage has been done to turbo and engine bearings running all that diesel in the sump.

I had the injector o-rings begin to leak at about 70000km and it is surprising just how fast te oil level can come up.

I wouldn't bother spending good money on testing injectors until the basics have been eliminated and ruled out for sure.

Hopefully all will work out for you and it will just be the o-rings and no other damage.

    Good Luck

Thank you for the feedback guys, i hope its only o-rings as well, do you need a special tool to take the injectors out, if so, do you know where i can find one in Perth?

There is a special tool available, however a cheap screwdriver bent into a hook will get under the bridge/middle of the injector and lever it evenly upwards. it will become clearer when you get the rocker cover off and take a look.

    Hi there Dave,

We have removed the injectors on Monday and the seals do look a bit bad. There are no visible cracks in the sleeves that we can see. We are thinking of having the injectors cleaned and tested but finances will dictate. We should have the new seals either today or tomorrow. I think we will just replace them and put the lot together and see how she runs. As it was a long-term problem I'll get Newton to keep a close eye on the oil level to see if it starts to creep up again. Hopefully that will fix the problem because if it still leaks diesel into the oil it will be most likely be the head and that is going to be expensive.

On the other hand how are you doing? Did you get your wheels sorted? We should get out there again soon but now the silly season has started it's going to be tough.

    Cheers, Jurgens.
