Hi All
I just bought a 2005 discovery 3 and ran into some trouble. I picked it up from the dealer, driving all good. As soon as I put on the headlights it stops changing gears. The engine starts to rev up as you press the accelerator as it tends to hold the gear. The problem get fixed as soon as I turn off the headlight. As I was taking it back to the dealer today in the morning the light was on auto and seen to be no problem but was going slow due to traffic. I thought the problem is gone but when I reached the motorway I manually turned on the lights and started driving. Within few minutes of driving the transmission fault signal came up and the air suspension deactivation light, traction control light and the brake light came up. I drove back to the dealer and tuned of the engine and started gain the light were gone but did that with headlight off. I dont know whether the light is the problem or its a coincidence.
I dont know whats wrong. Has this happened to any of you or any ideas.![]()

Thanks Graeme.
Lets see what the dealer finds out. I hope that is the problem. I will update you as i get the response from the dealer.
Yeah I agree with Graeme....my D4 had all sorts of weird things going on, warning lights and displays coming and going on the screens.
New battery, all fixed.
Cheers,
Kev.
Thanks for your reply.
Was it also affecting the transmission. In my case when the lights are turned on it stops changing the gears.
Hi Silverbolt
A bad earth can cause all sorts of strange problems, find out where all the earth points are from the workshop manual and check they are secure.
I've seen this before check your rear park lights and brake light bulbs sometimes when they're blow they short across so when the park lights are on they activate the brake lights as well this then confuses the car so it thinks your applying the brakes when you are driving. The best one I have seen is when someone fitted the wrong bulb in and the car would not turn off with the lights on unless they applied the brake
Friends
Thanks for all your response. Got the vehicle back today. The problem was with the rear park light. One wire was shorting and brake lights came up when parklight was turned on thus giving wrong signal to transmission.
As I am the first time owner of a discovery 3 any tips for me. How is the overall vehicle. Is it really troublesome as some people are telling me.
This sounds like a coincidence or they have distrubured something else I had the same drama with my 2006 sports which as far as I know share the same switch & dramas when it fails I put the solus reader on it and it told me it was the brake switch I looked into it a bit all the lights that come up share a common earth I checked the brake lights they were good so I removed the switch and pulled it apart & cleaned the contacts this when I noticed how the switch works all it probably needed was to be turned one way until it was home which lines up the gear teeth inside the switch. It has solved all the dramas I had with lights coming on I have picked up a new switch since then but have not fitted it
