I'm about to order a replacement clutch for my Defender 110 td5 - 2005.
I was looking at getting the heavy duty clutch kit from Britpart but i was warned to stay out of it being a single mass fly wheel they cause a lot of vibration.
My reasoning behind getting an HD is that it would last longer......Would it ?
I found a VALEO clutch kit and Dual Mass Flywheel at a good price from BROOKWELL in the UK.
The question is, does anyone have an opinion on the VALOE clutch ?
Would I be better getting an original LR clutch ?
Is there a particularly good replacement clutch that anyone could suggest ?
Thanks guys
I've fitted 2 solid flywheels recently (last 12 months)
Both were level 2 which had the Valeo cover, AP Racing centre plate, aluminium thrust bearing and the Rakeway solid flywheel.
Personally I wouldnt fit a std flywheel again if you have it out (esp if you tow a lot or do any hard offroading), but having said that they do seem to last for about 10 years.
One of the ones I fitted was in my 90 and any change in noise is not really noticeable.
The other was in a 2003 d2a and in that one you can hear it, especially at idle in traffic. It's not annoying but you can tell its not standard. When under load you cant tell atall.
I am on my third clutch and Fly wheel .
They seem to last about 150,000 km and as My Td5 produces about twice as much power as it left the factory with and I make the most of it I think that is reasonable
Whenever I have asked about solid Flywheels I have been advised to stay with the dual mass one
thats what MR fits, Its what they supply me with and its what a couple of my other suppliers give me when I cant get one through MR in time for the job.
I advise staying away from the single mass flywheel based soley on the potential for Isuzu like impulses coming into the gear box lunching your box bearings.
If however mass power and competition performance are more important and you dont mind potentially having to pull the box or engine every 100K Km or so to replace the friction plate (show me a comp box that makes that many K's anyway) then the single mass flywheel is an acceptable compromise because it eliminates a failure point that gives little to no warning immediately prior to failing.

What is the difference between the standard Def. flywheel and a dual mass one???
Valeo clutches are fine, but we fit Britpart clutches in the workshop and we are happy with their quality. If we had any doubt then we wouldn't fit them as it would mean we would lose a lot of workshop hours replacing it if it went wrong!
As for dual/single mass.. If you work it hard, tow, etc, then fit a single mass flywheel. It does 'chatter' a bit more than a standard dual-mass flywheel, but at least you won't be replacing it again. If it's a town car then dual mass will probably be more refined.![]()
