Seems very expensive. What exactly have they quoted for?
hi all,
i'v just taken my td5 disco to a mechanic in bentley for a service. it was running a bit rough & number 2 pot wasn't firing. i'v since been told that the head gasket is no good and needs replacing, along with a couple of other things needing do be done at the same time. the quote i'v been given is $6500. does this sound right? has anyone had to have this done to their td5 and if so any recommendations?
Seems very expensive. What exactly have they quoted for?
Hi there Sumo072,
Have a look in the WA-AULRoians section, there is a thread about another LR service center that is getting some good feedback. Maybe it's not a bad idea to take it for a 2nd opinion/quote.
Cheers, Jurgens
Hi again,
Ok the things i'v been quoted for to be repaired are as follows;
my oil cooler is weeping
Front prop shaft
Fuel pressure regulator, which i changed maybe 3 months ago so may just be a leaky gasket
Rocker cover gasket
Rear prop coupling
Front cam core plug
Top radiator hose with sensor to detect low coolant level
Remove head, fit new head gasket, replace head
Possibly recon radiator
Also has a fault code PWM failure.
Cheers
Wayne.
Hi Wayne,
Ok.
Oil cooler leak could be anything from a hoseclamp to the metal gasket between it and the block, or is it leaking internally. assuming its just from a gasket or clamp the relevant gasket/clamps whould be less than about $20 and thats being generous.
Front prop. Exchange lets say $300 - If you want new, speak to jeep konnection in melbourne and get a new Tom Woods one for about $650
If the FPR is leaking at 3 months old tell the supplier, it surely should be under warranty. if its the gasket - $10 for that at the most.
Head gasket, coreplugs, head bolts, rocker gasket and all other top end gaskets and seals from Turner Engineering in the UK. Full set is 150 pounds so say $240 + shipping, maybe $340 all up.
3rd item down on this link:
Special offer Land Rover parts from Turner Engineering
Dont bother with a radiator recore. Just get a new one. say $500 at the most.
Head skim and pressure test will be say $200
Rear coupling $100 or so maybe?
So that works out at say $1500 - 2000 in parts....
4.5-5k of labour.... mmmmm...
You compenetnt with spanners? the head gasket change is pretty easy.
At the very least, get a second opinion... not firing on number 2 doesnt defienetly point to a head gasket failure imo. Does it use any water or oil?
Cheers
Pete
Hi
Seems a bit expensive
I had a new radiator 2 weeks ago installed for $650 and new OEM Propshaft for $750, Top Radiator Hose, Front Cam plug - you should be able to do yourself quite easily check ebay for parts and this forum for advice.
Regarding the Head Gasket that is out of my league, never tried it
Thanks for the feedback guys. I think i need to sit down and do a little homework on this before forking out the bucks. Pete the mechanic performed a tk? test on the cooling system which showed positive for co2 & co, which i think shows an internal gasket leak into the cooling system. Engine uses very little oil, coolant shows no oil and temp guage has never gone any higher than halfway. Any other thoughts? The thermo fan has been running for extended periods sometimes after shutting the engine down.
Thanks guys
Wayne.
Hi Wayne,
How did you go with this?
I'm in the exact same situation. Seen a trusted Bently LR Mechanic and have been informed that at 200k I'm overdue for a blown head gasket. To repair this means it's worthwhile doing a whole heap of other repair/replacement work costing $6.5k
What are my options?
Cheers
I've not heard of doing a head gasket replacement becasue 'you are overdue for it'! That sounds like a dodgy car-salesman line to me... It's either blown or it's not.
I just had the head gasket replaced in my TD5 defender. Cost about $3000 with a new fuel pressure regulator and top rad hose as well (so probably around $2600 for the head work).
The 'LR Specialist' here in Sydney (St Peters) wanted to sting me for the usual laundry list of 'problems' such as: oil in loom (none there before I dropped it off, or after I picked it up), leaking oil cooler (was the gasket), suspension parts and various oil leaks (it has virtually no oil leaks), radiator (it was knackered).
The original quote was $24-2600, then once I dropped it off they called me with a quote of $7500! Times must be tough for them to be trying to bump up the invoice in such an obvious way - suffice to say they've lost my two TD5 land rovers as clients as a result. Not that I was a big client for them anyway.
I just got the HG done then replaced all the cooling hoses, radiator and oil cooler myself. Did it in my driveway, no problem. Plus I changed all the hose clips over to screw clamps at the same time - and I kept all the old hoses for spares.
You can get a non-genuine radiator for under $300 - I've gone with that one as it came recommended from the supplier, who I trust. He stocks the genuine one too, but recommends the less expensive one...
Cheers,
Adam
I disagree, we do quite a few pre emptive replacements at the 200 to 250K interval to prevent someone getting stuck in a remote place while on holiday, we find that EVERY ONE, Tdi and Td5, is about to leak, it is quite obvious looking at the gasket afterwards, AND I will do the job for nothing if I'm wrong; IE It isn't leaking/about to leak.
We're not all money grabbing types you know, some of us want the vehicle to remain reliable for the owner when they need it most.
I DO agree with shopping around, BUT be careful with people willing to do a job like that for peanuts.
Just out of interest, we'd charge $2500 for a basic head off-head on with all genuine parts including labour and machining.
Supplying a NEW head on the other hand will blow out the $$ to at least $6k, maybe more if the head is supplied from local suppliers.
Unfortunately for the industry here at times, buying online etc is a LOT cheaper and there is no possibility of us mechs buying and then selling on parts from importers here at any reasonable price when compared to overseas parts.
Thats just the way it is
