Question Leave alone or install SC80 battery control?

My D2a has a dual battery setup already and it seems to work fine, I also have an Anderson plug on the rear bumper for the camper and the current system seems to work fine charging the camper battery.

I have an SC80 from Drivesafe which I salvaged from my previous D2. The main advantage of this system (SC80) was that when there is a high draw such as when winching, the SC80 draws power from all the batteries it's connected to.

As I've already said, I've had no problems at all with whats in there (I have no idea of its brand), but how can I check to see if it does what the SC80 does? I don't really want to go to all the trouble of removing a system that seems to work and installing another unless I'm going to get some benefit from doing so.

Hi wardy1, the existing isolator you have in your D2a will not be working the same as your SC80.

The SC80 is the only isolator that keeps your batteries connected after the motor has stopped and keeps them connected until the common voltage of all the batteries in the dual battery set up drop to 12.0v.

This as many advantages over all the other isolators, which simply disconnect when the motor is turned off, or shortly there after.

I have have nothing to gain if you do or don’t replace the existing isolator with the SC80 you already have, but you will gain by doing so.

The main advantages are the extended operating time between charging.

Longer life spans for both your cranking battery and your auxiliary battery, and there are other advantages but these two alone, make replacing the existing isolator with the SC80 worth the effort.

Thanks Tim, great to hear an answer from someone with your qualifications. I knew there were other advantages in the SC80, just wasn't sure what they were.
I'll put the SC80 in tomorrow. Fortunately I was able to grab all the cabling from the old Disco too so it shouldn't be too big a job since the location of the auxillary battery is identical to the old setup.

    Thanks again.

Tim, the SC-80 keeps the batteries paralleled all the time, right ? (until the cut-off voltage is reached)

Using the USI-160 ... is it better to keep the aux & crank battery "shared" ALL the time, or keep the aux' "isolated" normally, only using "shared" mode when actually running accessories.

When it's being used as a daily drive, the D2 isn't running a fridge or any accessories.

    The batteries are both Optima's ... D31A + D34

    Thanks
    Kev..

Hi Kev, unless the is a specific reason, the USI-160 gives the best results when operated like the SC80, in SHARED Mode ( switch set away from the LED ).

Thanks Tim. That is how I've been running it. Might be worth noting that point in the revised owners manual.
