    TD5 Temperature Variation

Hi all, I have a Nanocom Evolution and have been watching the engine temp in my TD5 Disco under various conditions.

To set the scene the Disco has got 295,000kms on the clock and has never had any overheating issues or any real issues at all. It is an auto.

Normally on a warm day on the freeway at 100kmh it sits on 90 deg C, the temp goes up to 93-95 on a long incline. When stopped in traffic it gets to maybe 97.
I hear the viscous coupling lock up at about 97 degrees as the air noise is quite obvious when you are idling in traffic.

On the weekend (32 Deg C) I hammered it up a 3km twisty hill as there was a Mazda BT50 on my tail. At the top of the hill the temp had got to 107 and it had been steadily rising the whole way. I am concerned if it would have kept on climbing if the hill was longer.

Then down the other side as the temp dropped, which took a few kms, it got down to 84. I think 84 is a bit low.

    So my question is???

The viscous fan is fine, the radiator is clear, I was doing say 60kmh most of the way so there was plenty of airflow, is my thermostat a bit sluggish or stuck slightly open and not moving much. Actually it does take a while to get to 90 degrees when you are putting around the suburbs so I might just change the thermostat and report back.

Anyone else have some real world numbers.

P.S the temp on the Nanocom spikes sometimes, seems to go up about 5 - 10 degrees for a second or so. Anyone else see this spiking.

    Regards Gordo.

the spikes can usually be attributed to electrical noise sometimes from a bad earth or a dodgy connector on the plug.

dont panic till you hit 110 or so then panic.

manual or auto, if it was a manual and you were holding a tallish gear that would easily account for it.

Dave, its an auto and I was generally sitting between 3000 and 4000rpm.

Not sure on your cooling issues, but the spikes are common place.

    Numbers such as:

    RPM - 9000
    Temp - 450
    Boost - 7.5
    Volts - 125

However, if you save your trip, and then import it into Excel & have a good look, you will see these spikes are very few & far between, although, you will probably manage to find at least 1 on each trip.

This is where Dave is getting at with the theory about a bad earth or connector.

    Realish temps.
    Chipped???
At least with Nanocom you get a real indication of temps and have the option of backing off.
DONT ignore them higher temps, especially if you are chipped. An EGT gauge will help,I need one!!!
Mine were REALLY high on Nanocom original(chipped)
To be sure I renewed all the cooling system inc radiator and BIG intercooler, temps do still creep up on hills, but not so fast, and I have LOTS more power.

2nd and 3rd, some with the TC locked, some without.

I was caning it, foot was flat to the floor except for the bends when I had to slow a little.

No chip, stock as a rock.

An EGT would give some good info, if the EGT was not excessive but the engine temp kept rising it would show a poor cooling system.

    295,000 kms...

    Is the radiator original?
When was the coolant last changed?
    Water pump original?
    Thermostat - Is it original?

I'd suggest the inside of the radiator isn't good!

And in stock form thats getting a little too warm. Not hazardous, but no margin if you get my drift...

Does it still have the factory muffler? They are notorious for collapsing internally and restricting flow at that age.

    Good questions Mike..

Original radiator, thermostat and pump. Coolant was changed at 260,000kms.

Iam going to replace all the hoses as some are getting a little hard and will add a pump thermostat and radiator.

While the Nanocom was showing 107 the stock gauge didn't budge (as we know). This is possibly why a few oof these TD5's do head gaskets as apart from the Nanocom you have no idea how close you are sailing to the edge.

    Thanks Gordo
