Mine was doing this too. I masked up and ran a bead of automotive silicon along the roof seams - never leaked again!
My Defender roof has started to leak above the front passenger door. Water collects in the head lining and when the seat is occupied rushes out at the top of the door startling/wetting the passenger.
Above the door is a rivet which has come loose so I decided to replace it.
Before drilling out the rivet I dropped the head lining at the front. To get enough space for me to see the roof I had to remove the seat belts and door pillar trim, rear grab handles and trim.
In the corner there should be a bolt (see pic) but it had fallen out and luckily it was on the head lining. I re-fitted the bolt (with a dab of locktite) and drilled out the rivet and before fitting a new rivet I dipped it in silicone sealant. I also checked that the nuts that hold the roof on were tight.
Refitting the lining is was easy enough though I had to replace a few clips. I dropped one of the three screws that holds the mirror mounting bracket to the roof and I have no idea where it went!
Hopefully my passengers will stay dry next time it rains.

Well, gmawby, I hope you have better luck than I did. My entire ceiling has been out now for some months trying to locate the leak. It comes out of the internal gutter where it stops about 50mm from the front top edge of the door corner, drips onto the ceiling lining, down onto the plastic internal panel near the passengers knee, then onto the knee (obviously). Hah! my little bolt had also fallen out of the corner but it was easily retrievable - must be part of the anti quality control system. If only Edwards Deming had taken the concept of total quality control to Solihull instead of Tokyo after WW2 we wouldn't have anything to complain about.
I sealed (using an automotive sikaflex) up all the roof seams, including the front top "seam" for want of a better word as it appears to be welded or otherwise permanently fixed to both the roof skin and the windscreen frame. I also sealed around the alpine window. I haven't sealed the actual gutters yet as I can't see how water would leak in from there, but still she leaks and if there's one thing about Defenders that is inexcuseable it's the leaks. We know they're slow and noisy but coming from the land of perpetual rain, producing a dry car should be a priority.
hmmmm, i read with interest, i have the same leak but on top of the driver, me, and not knowing the car much, only had it for a month, i assumed it was the roof window seal, had no idea the roof itself is bolted or riveted on like that, i assumed it would be welded on to the body!

games indeed, well i had a look at it today again and it doesnt look bolted/riveted on to me, it is a 1995 model, any chance they aren't? looks to me like there a spotwelds above the rain gutters, i couldn't find any bolt in the top above the door that gmawby writes of, could you post a pic gmawby? you do have 'see pic' in yr post but i dont see any link to it,
